I wish posters would stop referring to Kowloon as an island. It is a peninsula.

Yes the Hong Kong Island and parts of Kowloon were ceded to the British in the Opium Wars in perpetuity the New Territories were the ones that were the 100 year lease, the British later claimed that since the Qing government didn't exist that lease was not longer enforceable. By the 1980's the British could see that their empire was over and agreed to return all of Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories.

Anyway I am not sure how much Hong Kong is relevant to these islands. Hong Kong while valuable was just too far away from the UK and the UK by the 80's was weak enough that they weren't capable of gaining a geo-political advantage from Hong Kong. These are different situation and just because the UK returned Hong Kong isn't a precedent that the Japanese would consider.

I've never reported a post to the Mods but this one really tempts me.
Ronny might actually unite Japanese and Chinese posters in agreeing he is an asshat and troll.

At times, he does post to show his intellectual genuity, which I like. But post like that makes you wonder how old he is. I wont bother. He is a known comodity.

basso has been doing the same type thing with his faux ebonics speech when referring to African Americans. Some people just expose who they are, and their ugliness shines out.

Are you referring to HK? Let's hear your version then.

I'm not even sure where to begin here.

Did you forget that China is a socialist nation, where they place heavy emphasis on labor, value creation, and the ability to make stuff? They have essentially the world's largest labor force at 1.4 billion people, but a lot of them work in factories for multinationals corporations, but they essentially go into foreign nations and essentially build highways, bridges, and buildings for free for these nations.

So who is a servant of whom? Many of these Chinese laborers work in exhausting conditions for Japanese corporations as well. So let's get something straight. Chinese create their own value, and they make their own stuff, if not for other people.

Quite simply, thank you for the straw man, but that point you were trying to make? It's irrelevant.

When someone finally posts the truth, "it is not relevant. Let's not belabor it anymore." So if judo hadn't bothered posting what anyone with a decent history book, or who has traveled to Hong Kong and has an interest in the subject, like myself, would know, it becomes irrelevant. I suppose that if no one had bothered, some of you would have continued the fictional version of history.

As for the fellow babbling about a "Greater China" that includes "The eastern Chinese societies, Japan and Koreas will be united as one some day, in one form or another. The leader has to be the Chinese, simply because they are indeed the origin and deep roots of the whole oriental culture. The conflicts between mainland china, Japan, Korean and Taiwan will continue in the near future, but that simply can not stop the almighty historical footsteps." The guy that claims he was "born Texan," if that is true, is an embarrassment to the state. And the bizarre Roids character with his equally bizarre map, what's after Taiwan and the entire South and East Chinese Seas? Mongolia? Hey, why stop there? Large parts of Germany are now part of Poland. Should they invade that country again and take that land back? After all, it used to be part of Germany. Should Italy invade Libya? Heck, they used to own it. Why stop there? Go back far enough and call Italy the Roman Empire again, just as that fool is showing a map from his back pocket showing the "boundaries" of the Republic of China, and that country can claim the bulk of Europe, the Mediterranean area, and large chunks of the Middle East. After all, over two thousand years ago they once owned it. Same weird logic some of you are using when talking about what makes up "China."

Too strange, people. Get a grip.

What the heck are you talking about? Your fictional information on the subject is as scarce as nothing and yet you have this big ego and just need to let out whatever bias you have against those "people". So this is all you have to say about some chiecken feed after you took time reading through the thread. Never mind the real history you are so fond of is actually used to help the cause of the "people". Hongkong without a qualifier includes new territory and Mao never made a trip to UK. Never mind this is beside the the entire thread, you just need to point out how rightous you are and how the "people" are alike. In the end, it is alway about you.

I am not sure I get what you are saying here either.. Are you saying that now that we know the history you agree it is not relevant?

I think you are ignoring human and the nature of nationalism here. No country or group of people likes to give up territory and much of the conflicts throughout human history up until today are driven by territory. Consider the Civil War wasn't fought primarily to end slavery but was dividing and thus losing almost half of the country.

I don't agree with the idea of a greaert China and that it should be something to fight for but I don't think it is strange at all that some people do.

    And "always" ...

Look, I grew up as one of those "people". I am typing in a non-native language. The stereotype can go on.

You know, it's funny. I used to hear "strange" all the time when Wall Street pretty much imploded in 2008. Strange this, strange that. Bizarre this, bizzare that. "We live in strange times" was what they would say. And who could blame them. Half the financial services industry imploded, and the people who always thought themselves as rich (and who knows if they really were or if it were some masquerade) were suddenly unemployed and picking up food stamps. For all we know, they probably still are.

If you have an interest in the subject (as you say you do), then you will know that HK was taken under the force of gun, and the Chinese people were force-fed opium by the British. Perhaps you believe the British gave the Hong Kong "freedom". And to that, I just laugh. (As so do the majority of HK people.)

For many of us, times are not so strange. The pillars of power are shifting, and people are here to reclaim what was once rightfully theirs. As Martin Luther King once said, "The arc of history is long, but it bends towards justice."

Ahh... purposely spelt my nick wrong just try to get anything out of me.

It only shows how childish you are.

So I guess by your logic, as long as Chinese get it back by force then able to hold off others, the islands will be rightfully under Chinese ownership again.

More reason why China needs to building more nuclear and weapons to defend such single minded bully like you.

Hahahaha, justice. Coming from the Chinese government, who practice realpolitik unlike any other country in the world ( and I'll admit, I applaud them for that), and taking a few rocks back is "justice". That's adorable.

Not to mention, I heard from another source that apparently some Chinese newspaper called for Okinawa to throw themselves off the yoke of Japanese imperialism. Shows pretty much what they're all about.

Well, frankly, yes. Even in our more enlightened age, geopolitical systems still fundamentally rest on force. If China can defeat Japan in a war and take the rocks, then it is theirs, at the end of the day.

That is, if China's really stupid enough to go to war over those rocks. Because China definitely does not have the economic or diplomatic power to make Japan cave.
