So where is your outrage about the crucifix masturbation film? Is it also "wrong" because it insults Christians, and the director is a jerk, and possibly a criminal? Or is it art?

I just think the director is selective in his targeting, misguided, or only portraying part of the story.

I haven't seen the film, but mostly I'm not interested in it. As a Christian I have a different perspective since I'm in the group targeted. I feel more pity of the director's possible misguided attempts, and don't take it personally since what it most likely criticizes isn't what I think the Christian religion is really about.

You know Paul Thomas Anderson veiled Scientology film "The Master" won two prizes at that same festival and missed out on the top prize by a technicality.

    as a result....

Harvey Weinstein hired security to protect him from Scientology

Sources tell Page Six that Scientology is countering the film’s marketing by running its own ads promoting its message in places where ads and stories about “The Master” appear.

Calls and mail from people believed to be Scientologists to Weinstein’s office have grown numerous enough that some on the film’s team have hired extra security, a source said. Weinstein had already been under close guard following a recent attempt to blackmail him by a man unrelated to the film.
Saturday, “The Master” swept the Venice Film Festival, winning Anderson a top directing prize as well as acting awards for Hoffman and Phoenix. It was also chosen by the Venice jury as best picture, but that honor was taken away due to a rule technicality.
Simultaneously at the Toronto Film Festival, “The Master” screened to big awards buzz and critical praise and Weinstein seemed relaxed and mingled without obvious security. The Weinstein Co. quickly put together a New York premiere tomorrow to benefit Martin Scorsese’s Film Fund at the Ziegfeld Theatre. Guests expected include the film’s Amy Adams and Anderson, Jessica Chastain and Trudie .

I am not a Christian so it is hard for me to say exactly how hateful and offensive this film is. I would have to know what exactly is the purpose of having that scene with the Crucifix? Is it meant to be an insult to Christians or is meant to show how emotionally disturbed this character is? For example the book The Exorcist had a crucifix masturbation scene, don't remember if the movie did, but it wasn't meant to insult Christians but show how evil the demon possessing the child was.

That said though if Christians started rioting over this I would say the same thing I said about Muslims rioting over the Innocence of Muslims and the Danish cartoons. While those might be offensive and you have the right to express that violence is wrong and it just hurts your own cause. As for whether the filmmaker of this particular film was setting out to offend Christians I would say the same thing as I have about the Innocence of Muslims, that is your right under free speech and that right should be protected but you should be aware there are consequences to that.

It's like my opinion of the Westboro Church. Their right to be hateful and bigotted should be protected just don't be surprised when you are universally shunned or if some angry parent of a dead soldier takes a swing at you.

One thing I did find interesting buried in the original article was this.
[rquoter]Moreover, this hypocrisy is a bipartisan reflex. During the orchestrated riots six years ago over publication of Muhammad caricatures in a Danish newspaper, the Bush administration dutifully declared the cartoons "offensive," expressed sympathy with Muslim indignation and suggested it would feel the same way about cartoons ridiculing any faith.[/rquoter]
I don't recall the supporters of the previous Admin. accusing that admin. of apologizing to Muslims over the Danish Cartoons situation.

^^^ I remember my parents taking me as a kid to see Young Guns at the now defunct Cineplex Odeon near Westhiemer and Fountainview (behind the Becks Prime) and there were some protesters picketing over the Last Temptations of Christ showing. My mom was like "oh the new Scorsese" (we're a big time cinema family) and one lady started throwing insults at her for wanting to see it and taking her child. Moms gave her the South America woman side eye. They were still protesting afterwards so we caught Married to the Mob as a second feature.

Upon reflection the lesson learned that day was... 1988 rocked! Scorsese, Demme, Young Guns, new NWA & Metallica all on the same weekend.

I don't get what your point is. Every knows that the west doesn't riot about films but they do make a fuss (see Passion of Christ).

Are you trying to say we are better than them? Or that a religious book is the source of all the problems in the world?
