I get the feeling from watching him on the sidelines, and his interviews, that he's a little too intense for his own good. I wonder if he'll get burned out before his contract is up. A competitive, intense coach with a tanking roster filled with youngsters probably is going to take its toll.
This might be the case, but I just think he's one of these super competitive coaches like JVG that on the sidelines doing commentary he's a totally different person than when he has skin in the game, and the competitor in him takes over where he's literally sick when he loses. If you followed JVG during his Rockets years, you know what Im talking about. The funny, outspoken JVG we all know and love to hear talk now on ESPN wasn't the same guy that coached the Rockets or the Knicks. Alot of that had to do with their competitive nature. Frankly the guy was kind of a A#$ as a coach. Im a pretty competitive person myself, and know what it feels like to hate to lose so bad that it makes you sick. When as a player you didn't just win everything, you won at the highest level for decades, that feeling must be elevated X10. Im not saying McHale can't handle coaching an up and coming team, but I do recognize the challenge in keeping him as the right guy for the job. If he has it in his stomach to put winning aside(something impossible for someone like him to do) and focus on the development part of the game, I think he's the right guy for the job. He could be a great mentor for someone like Motiejunas or Royce White and really kick start this next era of Houston Rockets basketball, or he can bow out with his tail between his legs and say that he's not the man for the job. My guess is that the competitor in him takes over, and he's goes to battle with these young guys this year hell or high water once again. If the young guys buy into what he has to offer, they could do something special this year, and maybe even make the playoffs. This would be great, because that means they tapped some sort of special talent on their roster, and the future looks bright. If they dont, then its high water, and Mchale's gone with a bad track record to justify the coaching change, and the team has a losing record deep in the lottery(good news for the tankers). McHale as the coach this year might actually be a win/win.
