I feel that the value of a player is relative to the team he is being traded or offered to. A team that is desperate for a point guard "might" value Machado more than Lamb even though the latter has more potential.

I considered it. But, he can't be traded right now without his consent, which damages trade value. Plus I still think a lot of teams will take a wait-and-see approach to Lin to find out if he really can be Linsane. And, it's all irrelevant anyway because the Rockets won't trade him now.

And, I don't think we can trade our pick either because of the Stepien rule. If we traded the lottery-side of that pick, we would satisfy one of the 2 counterparties in 2013, but have a potential obligation in 2014, which could leave us out of the first round 2 consecutive future years. Unless there's a pick owed to us that is guaranteed to come in 2013 or 2014 (no protections).

Alright everyone... Its a good time for a road trip to the recent past-

Lets look back just merely a year or so ago-

-It was late 2010 and early 2011, The New Jersey Nets where heavy frontrunners in the mix to aquire Carmelo Anthony as he coveted a move to the big apple and a chance to team up with another star.

They had a package that consisted of Devin Harris, A Recent top 3 draft pick Derrick Favors, 2 First Round picks(#3 pick in Enes Kanter, and future 2013 Top 7 protected pick/Top 6 protected in 2014)

Sounded like a deal that no GM would pass up right?... Well young GM Masai Ujiri didnt think so and opted to trade Carmelo to the New York Knicks instead for a package everyone at the time thought was to be ridiculous because there was very little coming back in the way of draft picks, and cap savings. Really... the best asset your getting in return is Danilo Gallinari??... Im sure fans werent the only ones scratching their heads here.

Well other GM's take note of what is on the market, and just days later in a deal that nobody saw coming, the Utah Jazz took advantage of New Jersey's tabled offer and shipped Deron Williams off for New Jersey's trade package.

-Seems like an eternity later and here we are in the aftermath of the Dwight Howard saga and Houston is left holding the bag on a superstar trade that fell apart in the final hour. Every GM in the NBA knows what Houston has to offer now, and I guarantee you there are alot of them out there that would love to have that offer.

I would be shocked if Morey's phone isn't going to be ringing off the hook here in the next few week when the Summer cools down and the NBA is back in training camp mode. NBA trades operate on deadlines, and the next deadline for pre-season trades will be sometime around October 1st most likely.

My point here in brining this up is that this might be the one time where Morey wont have to be the one dialing the phone, and he will for once be in a position of negotiating power because somebody will finally want something that he has, and not the other way around. There might be a great deal to be had that could keep the Rockets in full rebuild mode and get back a player to build around in the future. Who that player is I really dont know, but nobody else really saw Deron Williams coming at the time did they??... So who knows what might be offered in the coming weeks.

Just because Rob Hennigan didnt bite on the Toronto pick as the key to a deal doesn't mean that another GM wont covet the hell out of that asset. I will be shocked if there isn't a trade made right before training camp with that Toronto pick being the point of interest.

I'm gonna say Martin. Either tied or a close second is the Toronto pick.

    Great post!

Just wonder if Morey hasn't already attempted to trade for every player at Deron Williams' level and higher and whiffed. Unfortunately, I also don't think our trade package is at the level of New Jersey's.....

    Trade value? Toronto pick

    Highest upside? I believe DMo.

Highest upside viewed by general audience? Lamb.

So, who is the team with the disgruntled superstar that is going to call Morey wanting to talk turkey?

I can see the slim possibility of Portland wanting to unload Lamarcus if things don't go well this season. But, he's not on the same level as Dwight, Deron, etc. Sorry. No way do we pay anything close to what we offered for Dwight to get him. Other than that possibility, what other megastars are possibly going to become available?

A lot of people seem to think we have a better team than the raptors. Interesting.

I think there is a better chance trading for an impactful all star during the season than before the training camp. Teams which start off slow might decide to tank for the season.

If I recall, Knicks were not interested in Carmelo at the beginning of that saga. D'Antoni wasnt interested. They had no assets. But Carmelo demanded to be traded to Knicks. He would not sign an extension if traded to Nets. That brought the interest from Dolan. Very much like D12 situation. Nets were the Rockets. Knicks were the Lakers. At the end, both players won.

So do most of online betting sites. Here is the odds for one online betting:

    Winning Finals:

    Houston Rockets--125-1 (17th)
    Raptors-----------250-1 (24th)

    Houston Rockets--90-1 (10th WC)
    Raptors-----------150-1 (13th EC)

Ideally, we want Raptors to finish 27th, then we will get the best pick possible (Raptors pick is a top 3 protected)

FYI: As a free agent signing, Lin (and Asik) cannot be traded until December 15; however, after December 15, they CAN be traded without their consent. Had NYK/CHI matched the Rockets' offer sheet and retained Lin/Asik, then those teams could not have traded them without their consent (or to Houston no matter what) for one full year. But, since Lin/Asik actually AGREED to sign with Houston, no such restriction applies to the Rockets.

    Toronto pick(if high), Lamb/Dmo.
Lin has too large of a contract to have a ton of value. If he plays very well in the upcoming season that might change.

The Toronto pick has a higher value to most of the league. Atlanta now has a piece of this year's Rocket's draft pick, not the Nets. To the Hawks, the Rockets draft pick probably has more value if they wait long enough to ensure Rockets suck long enough. I could easily see the Rockets removing the lottery protection to top three and shipping Dallas pick to Atlanta for Smith at trade deadline.

Nope nope nope nope. Doesn't help us and destroys our assets. Josh Smith is not going to make this team championship caliber. We may trade for him but it will be for Martin straight up and possibly some sort of future draft pick swap. But we're not giving away the farm for him.
