is there anyone here working for US companies from their overseas residence? i recently moved to asia but still working for the same company doing exactly the same thing. i agreed to their offer after the local adjustment. then the more i think about the more pissed off i am. i am losing about 40% of my US salary. so i am wondering, is there a law that forbids american citizen working from overseas for US companies? there are people in the company that works from home based in US. the only big change is the time zone difference.

That sucks. The company I work for usually gives a 40-70 % uplift for working overseas while providing free housing.

well, it's not that the company asked me to move. they don't really have similar positions here. i moved due to personal reasons.

I know that our company does 'local adjustments' for overseas employees as well as U.S. employees. It does seem odd that it appears to be such a large cut, but I am not familiar enough with our policies to know how odd that is for you.

yeah, that's why i am wondering if i can just get US salary while living overseas. it sucks the industry is not very high paying in asia. if i worked in financial world, it would be a different story.

Expats typically get paid more but your case is probably different since you were seeking the transfer.

Yeah, that's the part that had me confused until he said it was his choice.

I grew up in Saudi Arabia, and the pay increase was huge to cover that fact....

My brother in-law and my sister are moving to Dubai in November with his company that he currently works for here, for the same reason....and to get out of the US for a while. His chance to see the world.

If you don't want to tell us the country, what region are you in? South East? Central? Way East? South?

Is there a North Asia? I've never heard of a North Asia.

Isn't the cost of living fairly high there compared to other Asian cities? I can only think of Japan and Korean cities being more expensive. Sucks if you're taking a pay cut.

in pharma related industry. HK is all about finance. it's pretty exprensive here. which is why it sucks even more. the only good news is that i don't have to pay any federal or state tax anymore. tax here is pretty low. i am not sure about social security and medicare tax though. may still have to pay those. i have to find someone to do my tax next year LOL. getting real complicated.
