It will take longer than that. The demographics are what he say they are but Latinos in Texas have one of the lowest turnout percentages in the country. Texas as a whole ranks dead last in turnout.

Historically democrats have thrived on high turnout while Republicans have performed the best in times of low turnout.

Latinos in California, for example, vote in far larger numbers than in Texas. The reason for this disparity is largely unclear but it is real and until that changes, Texas will take a much longer time than it should to shift to the left.

Wasn't is George H W Bush that appointed Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court? Wasn't it George W Bush that appointed Colin Powell and Condi Rice to be the highest serving African Americans in US History?

Wasn't Ted Cruz (a Cuban) elected to Senate in Texas and Marco Rubio (a Cuban) elected by Republicans?

The fact that you say the Republican Party is racist in any way is just completely contrary to all evidence.

But anytime African Americans or Hispanics are allied with Republicans they're ostracized by their own communities which is really sad.

I think you're right in general - but all it takes is one great candidate to accelerate the process some. As Obama did with increasing black and young voter turnout, a popular and credible Latino candidate for say, Governor, could change the dynamics of Latino turnout in the state. It may be limited to elections when that candidate is running, but it would be a significant start.

Sad for what reason? I thought Republicans were against bilingual education and people using Spanish as a primary language in the US.

I think it's so illuminating that these are the kinds of things Republicans focus on - it shows just how far out of touch they are with the Latino community in the US.

What I find amusing personally is that I went to high school in Houston with several Latino students who didn't speak Spanish. They came from long time Hispanic Texas families, families of several generations, some who dated back to the Texas Revolution, and weren't bothered at all about their lack of Spanish, at least until they took the language in school. ;-)-

I'm not sure if that reflects my age, but it wasn't uncommon at all for Latino Texans to not speak Spanish back in the 1960's, at least in my experience. Castro holds degrees from both Stanford and Harvard, so if he really feels the need to learn that language, I suspect that he can learn how to manage it.

Being hispanic, I do understand the GOP stance on illegal immigration. Don't be fooled more and more hispanics in general are turning away from the democrats. Its not anti hispanic, its anti illegal immigration.

Good post but that wasn't the only thing Bush 2 did right. He was very good on AIDS relief in Africa.

I thought Castro was a wonderful surprise. I even think he could be the future of the party. But, to me, his speech was only the third best of the night behind Michele Obama and Deval Patrick in that order. And Ted Strickland gave Castro a run for his money too. Four great speeches plus a pretty good one from O'Malley, all in the first night? And then Clinton, Fluke and Warren tonight?

This has been a remarkably great convention for the Democrats and it is so much stronger by contrast to the confused mess that the GOP convention was.

I no longer believe that this will be a close election. And I cannot WAIT for the debates.

Nothing personal Batman, but I really wish people would stop saying this. I, personally, am hopeful that President Obama will be reelected. However, I don't want any potential voters to think he's got it in the bag and stay home; he's up against a very loud, very vitriolic and very passionate opposition, which has been waiting since Mitch McConnell let it slip that they were working to keep President Obama from a second term.

Everyone should vote. Everyone should vote with the mentality that their vote is important, no matter their electoral college standing. It's your vote, not anybody else's, and you are right to exercise it.

Thank you for pointing out in 2016, this jai alai enthusiast dream ticket will be a force to reckon with in south florida's betting halls. The cay-yay oh-cho vote is locked down!

This will play very well in California! Among the 5 cubans there!

When you use phrases in spanish during your speech you're falsely alluding to your knowing the culture and language more than you do when you can't even speak the language.

I don't think its a pre-requisite at all and I applaud what they've done and think they're mother was right by immersing them in english helping them better prepare for eduation and life in the US.

But when you're throwing out phrases and alluding to knowing and being more Spanish than you are when you can't speak the language its a bit misleading.

Being Spanish is much more than simply knowing Spanish.

Except the only time he used Spanish in his speech was when he was repeating things his Grandmother said to him - and she DID say them in Spanish. Its a Spanish phrase he has known since he was a kid, and he never made any other attempt to use Spanish.

You may wish it and perhaps Fox has told you this, but it is not a fact that more and more hispanic are turning away from the Dems.
