I rarely start threads, but had to after watching this speech. Julian Castro, Mayor of San Antonio, gave the best speech I've seen at a convention since Barack Obama's in 2004. Four years later, he ran for President of the United States and won, and it all went back to that speech at the 2004 convention. Tonight's speech was just as impressive, in my opinion, and we saw a future star of the Democratic Party, and in national politics. Julian Castro will be the first Latino President of the United States. You heard it here first.

Viva Texas! Viva Julian Castro! Viva America!

It was pretty good. Would love to see him take on Perry.

Libs are so gullible. Make a great speech -- you now deserve to be President! Seriously, after the past four years, I can't believe this logic is still being used.

Castro is a total fraud, and America will come to find this out. Quite honestly, this speech was not that great -- his oratory skills are average at best. Ever since Obama's 2004 speech, the brain dead response to any popular convention speech is that the speaker is the next President. Yawn. Marco Rubio runs laps around both of the Castro gemelos -- he's actually got some substance behind him and depth of character. Julian is just your typical underqualified token speaker at a convention -- it's really sad that the Dems don't have any legitimate Hispanic leaders in government. Bill Richardson's fading star is probably the best they have, which is sad.

If he can raise enough money to mount a strong media campaign, needed to take on Perry and his bottomless money pit, thanks to some far-right billionaires, Julian Castro can beat him. Oh, and that speech was better than "pretty good." I've seen a lot of convention speeches from both parties, and Castro's knocked the ball out of the park.

And Trader_J, I know watching that speech nearly killed you. Sorry, but he's a Democrat, and yes, you have reason to be worried.

The speech was amazing, and the fact that Trader J felt threatened enough to come in here and try to speak out on it only backs up how threatening Castro is to the GOP.

i find it astounding that any of you believe that anyone from either the democratic or republican parties can change a damn thing. i don't think america is broken, i just think our 5 minutes are up. and this is coming from an eternal optimist.

A single speech? That's the bar now for leadership in this country? Guess I'll check out YouTube.

i actually think Deval Patrick had the best speech of the night. Castro's speech was also fantastic, though. one thing is clear...night one of the DNC blows ALL of last week's RNC completely out of the water.

One of the great stories about Julian Castro is that he's an identical twin, and his twin is also a Democrat. His brother, Joaquín, is a state representative running for Congress. My significant other has worked with Joaquín (she works for the Legislature in a capacity I won't reveal), and knows him pretty well, but has yet to meet Julian. You can bet that if she mentions a cocktail party they are both going to attend, one she's invited to, I'll be sure to go.

And bobrek, no worries on the birth certificate. They're both native Texans! ;-D-

Lil'texxx, you have no idea how funny your comment is.

Just in case anyone's sarcasm meter isn't working, I was kidding. :)

With an identical twin we could have a "Dave" scenario if he were elected.

Wow, I didn't even think about that possibility. It would probably drive the Secret Service nuts trying to tell them apart! The odds are good that if Julian eventually makes it to the White House, Joaquín will be in Congress, in either the House or the Senate. That should help the Secret Service's job a little bit. Both brothers are pretty short, which goes against the popular myth that you need to be tall to get elected President. Perhaps we'll get a chance to see if the myth is real.

    - Fine speech, though he smiled a bit too much. Gave off an air of being a sarcastic smarty pants. Not sure how this combined with his baby face play with older folks (I an slightly younger than him).

    - How good is he as a mayor? Are SA citizens happy with hik generally?

    - Identical twins are creepy. Who is the highest ranked elected official in US history who is an identical twin?

    - I wonder where his hairline will be in 4 years.

Rick Perry will chew this wimp up and spit him out. One speech does not a career make (if so, then I hope it better be better than this speech). San Antonio has a terrible crime rate and school test scores are off the charts bad under this mayor. Dude has had three years to do something.

Way to go dems. Can't find a Hispanic leader of accomplishment, so you pick another empty chair to talk to the nation.

His brother is a twin? I didn't know FIDEL was that young.
