There is one fundamental if anyone wants to be successful in anything; model after people who were/are successul! Same as in basketball. We really need to look into Spurs of last year. They are, for the last two years, the most successful team without any real superstars power. Spurs had the highest offensive efficiency and shared the most wins 50-16, projected 62-20 in an 82-game season. Spurs roster of 2012: C- Duncan- this ageless center not even ranked in top 10 by many. PF- Boris Diaw- 9-year vet past his prime SF- Kawhi Leonard- 15th overall pick rookie who had a decent year. SG- Manu Ginobilli- better players: Kobe, Wade, JJ, Iggy, Harden PG- Parker- CP3, DWilliam, Rose, Rondo, Westbrook, Curry are all better players. Not a single Spur was in top 5 in their respective position. But they ended up sharing the best record in NBA. Is the whole greater than the sum of parts? The answer to that is no! Look back at Spur roster 2010 when they were 50-32: C- Duncan PF- Antonio McDyess SF- Richard Jefferson SG- Manu Ginobilli PG- Parker Not much an upgrade when you have a rookie in the roster and the core players aged 2 more year. Their offensive system got better next year when they went 61-21! Why were the Spurs so efficient the last two year? It's easy to learn and can be implemented by Rockets this coming year, evidently by the result of Spurs last year where they actually got better by winning 24 of 27 games to end the season. To McHale: Model after teams who are successful and do like what Spurs did two year ago--study and switch the offense to D'Antoni's system. This will guarantee many more wins in upcoming seasons, even if we can't acquire any superstar! Spurs improved by about 10-12 games for 2 straight years and so can Rockets!
Actually, it's not true. It's a paradox, really. People who are successful do their own thing and not model after others. People are successful because they adapt to their own strengths and excel in their own environment based on their own profile, thus having maximum flexibility and adaptability in their own endeavors. Modelling others can only lead to failure in being successful.
Ginobli is also a top 3 SG when healthy. And you think Curry is better than parker lol. Curry will probably never finish in the top 5 in MVP voting or win a finals MVP. He has never even made an all star game.
The Spurs became a very successful franchise because of that one year when they tank their butt off to draft Tim Duncan.
Mainly because the success of the team. Statistically speaking, last year wasn't even in his top five.
Wade and Kobe are the best SGs by far if healthy, IMO. Anyway.... Wow tc your really underestimating Tony Parker. Curry better than Parker? Lmfao. Spurs have Tim Duncan(top 10 player all time) who is old but still effective, depth, one of the best NBA coaches of all time, a top 5 PG last season, and one of the best 6th men of all time.
You may juggle the position a bit. Debatable among fans but they are close to where I had them. Best of all time doesnt mean best of now. It's just another term for accumulated caree achievements. Bynum is not anywhere near best of all time, but does that mean Duncan is better than him?
The successful people may not model after anyone but we can be sure someone had done it in similar fashion. They just may not know it. but perhaps in some subconcience way, they modeled after someone. You can't really deviate much from a basic set of principles and be successful.
Mchale is going to run his system and that is it. We had the players to run RA's offense last year that was effective but he wouldn't do it let us suck on offense last year.
What I'm saying is that successful people don't even have those basic set of principles in mind- therefore, they're not adhering nor deviating from them. They're just operating from their perspective and their place in their environment instead of modelling others. I disagree that they're modelling after someone subconsciously. Just because you end up doing something that reminds others of something someone else did doesn't mean it didn't spring solely from the current environment.
I never said Duncan was nearly as effective as he was in the past. If he was in his prime the Spurs would have made it to the Finals and probably beat the Heat. He is still very effective though. He and KG are still great defensive anchors who can rebound effectively and score when needed. Tim Duncan even at the age of 36 is a large part of the Spurs success.
You'll notice that most of their players are either African American or Euro. Not many whites. This is how you build a good team.
Point taken. You can google "top NBA centers 2012" and not many will list Duncan as top 10. LOL...man I thought this thread can become a santuary for Cfans who are interetested in Bballl and are tired of reading Lin's daily activities or racially related. This thread is officially tainted!
It is 100% true, though. You can't win without great African American or Euro players in the NBA nowadays. This is the kind of stuff that smart front offices like the Spurs' exploit to their advantage while less smart and/or more racist teams waste draft picks on the likes of Adam Morrison, Jimmer Fredette, Luke Jackson and JJ Redick. The last team to win a title mostly based on largely on players who were neither African Americans nor Euro was the McHale/Bird Celtics.
