Players can develop their shooting as they go along with their professional careers. Have faith. At least the dude can defend. I know one player who can shoot the lights out but sucks on the defensive end that you all hate
Steve Novak, is indeed a silly comp to make. No way Parsons will be one of the finest shooters in the NBA, even though he will probably improve. I can see Parsons becoming a Luol Deng type as that guy who made the blog post said.
That's exactly right. You have the jump shot to burn teams that sag off and make them play up close and honest. But you don't want it to become the premier weapon of choice and stand around and shoot the J when you are as good as Chandler is on the move. And you are also right, if his shooting improves to 40% from 3 and 75% from the line, Chandler will be devastating and may become a franchise player. Because that means that he will have to be defended tight on the perimeter and he can then catch and drive to the paint and collect fouls and go to the free throw line a ton. Guys that get to the FT line a ton and can knock 'em down.....most of them become All-Stars.
Guess this is the official Chandler Parsons thread? His offseason workout: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/4DDOdOhUSF0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Parsons' shooting will naturally improve incrementally. However, I am expecting a bigger jump in his overall game this year. Players who take big leaps in their games from year to year usually are those who were underdeveloped physically. At the beginning of last season, Chandler was a skinny kid. After injuring his shoulder at the end of the year, he has put on at least another 10 lbs of muscle after focusing on strength training. People don't talk about Parsons' upside a lot here, because most assume he will be at best a role player. I think there is some truth to that, although he can become a "star" role player, IMO. The player's game who he reminds me the most of -athletic wing, excellent defender, average shooter, good ballhandler and passer- is... Andre Iguodala. Spoiler
Excellent! Nice "theme music" too Reminds me of "I'm Gonna git you Sucka." I think Parsons will be a very good role-player. Teams need players like this: Lock-down defenders, fundamentally sound, can hit the big shot. Robert Horry types. Our team is currently made up of these types of players - except more athletic and taller. Plus, one (or more) of them might break out and reach all-star status. The future looks bright in my opinion.
I will say this again, 3pt shooting isn't an indicator of a good shooter. 3pt % is an indicator of range. There have been and always will be guys who can't or don't shoot well from 3pt range but are exceptional shooters. The difference between becoming a really good players shooting the ball is having the ability to shoot over players. If you can't shoot over guys or create space to get a shot, ur ceiling is very limited.
That's crazy. While I was watching that video and thinking of Chandler's all around game, bball IQ, excellent D, and work ethic with potential to improve his overall game every season the first name that came to my mind was Andre Iguodala. I think this is Chandler's ceiling as well. A glorified role player who would be even more valuable playing with a true star player. Chandler is already similar to AI in that they both contribute so much to winning with their all around play and hustle. I am a huge AI fan so saying this is Chandler's ceiling is pretty impressive and gets me excited to see him mold his game into this type of player.
Except that Igoudala relies solely on his athleticism, his ball handling skills are poor and so is his basketball IQ, his mentality is also completely different. I'm not saying that Parsons is better than Igoudala because he's not I'm just saying that there is no comparison between them, both are good on D and both hustle, that's all there is to it. Parsons is way slower and not as athletic, but he plays a lot smarter than Igoudala and is much more comfortable with the ball in his hands, i would go as far as saying that parsons mostly relies on his smarts which is why he has so much potential if he improves his shooting and finishing.
Chandler has a streaky shot, kind of like Trevor Ariza. But he's got the clutch gene and makes them when it counts.
Just watching his workout video now, Chandler also likes to fade away on his shots which isn't good for consistency.
Iguodala has excellent ball handling skills - some people even consider him a point forward. He averaged 6.3 assists a season ago, which is the second most of any forward with the exception of LeBron I believe.
That was just on the 15 footers that he was practicing like he was shooting over a taller defender on all of his other shots he was coming straight down then backing up to get the pass from the shoot a way.
It amazes me the misconception of Iquodala as a "strictly athletic player with bad handles and low bball IQ". It is a shame his overall skill set gets overlooked because of his freakish athleticism. Even when Iggy's athleticism eludes him he will still be a solid contributing player.
stop being amazed and watch some games ok? there's a reason philly saw no future with him at the helm and have been actively trading him forever, he needed to play point forward because they had no one else who could bring the ball up but if you actually watch him handle the ball you will notice how uneasy he is with it and the bad decisions he makes if he actually had ball handling abilities and high bball IQ as you implied combined with his undisputable athleticism he would be on Lebron's level or just a notch below
