My wife is 17 weeks pregnant. We got our initial blood testing back.

For the Down's Syndrome, the results say the baby has a 1:180 chance and it is classified as High Possibility.

My and my wife is extremely worried right now.

    My questions are:

is this possibility really high? should I be worried?

what further testing should I consider?

my wife is 26 years old and I am 28 so I am presuming age is not a problem.

    Thanks in advance.

Why are you worried? Asks the man with a 5 month pregnant wife.

No, that doesn't necessarily mean your baby will have Down's Syndrome. That is just an estimate, based on markers they find in your results comparable to other women your wife's age and gestation. There is also a 10-15% chance of a false positive result on the quad test. Anyways, the 1:180 is a low chance.

    How low? How about 0.56%

Although I don't think you should be that worried, I think you could get an amnio done, which looks at the embryo's chromosomes and would be able to tell you if there is a trisomy which is present with Down's Syndrome. I have a chromosome translocation so we'll likely have to get that test done should we ever manage to get pregnant. There is some risk of the test causing complications to the pregnancy, but they're pretty low.

Yup. Math fail from bob and English fail from OP.

    .005 is .5%. .005% is .00005.
And subject should read Advice from the Doctors.

Anyway OP, you guys are young so it's not as likely but you should do all the tests the doctors suggest. Don't worry too much right now.

next thing they will do is an amniocentesis...or a chorionic villi sample...
and yes as other posters said...its just a higher percentage than the normal population...but its 0.5% chance...

I don't think anyone who isn't a doctor should be giving this guy advice from various sources on google.

I thought this was a thread for us laymen to give doctors advice, such as "an apple a day keeps you away!" I am fairly disappointed to find I've been tricked.

If you have serious questions, you should always be asking your doctor - not the random assortment of village idiots we've managed to collect here that will pretend that they are doctors.

The only reason I am talking to him about this is because my wife and I have been through this also. My wife is five months pregnant and she have gone through tests.

Age aside, isn't Down Syndrome hereditary? Like if there isn't a history of DS in the family, the couple shouldn't be worried?

not a doctor at all, but a 1/180 chance of something happening shouldn't be cause for alarm. according to wikipedia, the normal probability for someone around your wife's age is probably around 1/1560. I guess when you compare it to that number, it's pretty high relatively. Again though, a 1/180 chance of something happening is very low, so try not to get too worked up over it.
