[CBS SPORTS] Replacement refs to start regular season

Ridiculous. We aren't talking about a $100M problem here. I can't believe the league is sitting on a $4B operation and asking the refs to take a 30% pay cut. Most profitable professional league in the US, but unlike MLB NHL and NBA....NFL refs earn 5 digit salaries....about half the pay over the other major sports.

Yes, they do work the fewest games, but you're still arguing about a critical component of your operation and haggling over 0.2% of your gross. Jesus.

 

NFL refs earn 8K per game and the NFL wants them to take 5K per game, IIRC.

 

Completely agree. Just get something done. It's not worth the ridicule the league is going to get while the replacement officials are in place and with how bad some of these guys have been, you risk something being goofed up in a big way during a game that matters.

I have to side with the refs on this.

Did someone mention refs make 7-8 grand per game?

20 games equals way over 100k. Someone needs to budge. For 150 thousand dollar range, I would expect them to work full time. (i think that is one of the hurdles).

Also another thing is adding younger refs to and have more alternates. If you bring in new refs started them off at 3 or 4 grand per game, with the ability to earn more with experience.

I think they both need to budge. No need to cuz their pay, but also the older refs shouldnt get mad for the NFL trying to bring in more people.

 

the original refs aren't exactly immune to colossal mistakes either.

 

This will be resolved by Week 4. The refs, at this point, still have the Ace card to play. Mistakes by replacement refs. Especially the opening game.

 

Exactly - both sides are playing a game of chicken here, and the first couple of weeks worth of replacement ref performance will end this. If they do great, the refs lose all their leverage. If a team loses a game because of a ridiculous call, the NFL loses all their leverage.

Working in the NFL's favor is instant replay, and the fact that all scores and turnovers are automatically reviewed, leaving the coaches the ability to challenge smaller things to get calls right.

 

I heard on the NFL station on Sirius the other day and they said one of the main obstacles is the official's pension plans. Apparently as it stands right now, officials get a pension that is even better than what the players get. The league wants to get rid of the pension and change it to a 401K.

I LOVE watching the refs huddle for 15 minutes just to call a 5 yard penalty. Doing it multiple times a game is even BETTER! 6 HOUR GAMES!!!

 

Doing it on a PAT is the trifecta of stupid. I actually saw that in a game last week.
