Didn't see that till now. Yeah, that changes things because no matter what you do, it won't be pretty.
tell me more about your short roof jump was it a Bermuda grass or more St. Augustine you landed in? Were there any stickers in the grass?
If he was high instead of drunk this never would have happened. True story. Edit- Tex beat me to it! I should read the whole thread next time.
Though there is no excuse for the stupidity of horsing around on the outside of those things, I will say generally that some of those escalators are quote scary. They make them so tall these days. I'm not a proponent of suing everybody for anything when bad stuff happens. I don't believe anybody (except the victim) or any entity is at fault here. But I do think there should be more common sense applied when designing some of these ballparks, precisely because the environment created is one that encourages people to get drunk, and act rowdy. RIP Mr. Kelly.
So, when you land on your feet and fracture both calcaneouses, T-12, and then try to brace your fall and break both your wrists, and possibly both of your shoulders, and then hit your head and knock yourself out? Yeah, have fun recovering from that. My point is, there's no correct was to fall onto concrete from 3 stories up. You're either going to end up as a vegetable, on a ventilator, or six feet under. Especially when you're disoriented as the fall is initiated. No matter what, don't sit here and judge what others are posting when you're posting something that's equally dumb and disrespectful. Nice expert analysis, though.
cmon man...there's nothing scary about a damn escalator. get on and hold on to the railing while it gradually takes you up. it's not hard. you dont even have to hold on to the railing....it's not a rollercoaster
And to quote the great Mitch Hedburg, “An escalator can never break: it can only become stairs. You would never see an Escalator Temporarily Out Of Order sign, just Escalator Temporarily Stairs. Sorry for the convenience.”
please stop. There is a huge difference when intentionally jumping off something and having your wits about you versus accidentally falling and being completely caught off guard
I didn't see that he fell from 3 stories till later (I originally read 15 feet which is very survivable), and on concrete no less. That changes A LOT. I never judged anyone and even said it's difficult to predict what anyone (including myself) would have done in that scenario because it's easier to analyze than to actually go through. That said, there are ways to break up a fall and come out better than you would have in many cases. I'd rather have a broken ankle, leg, arm elbow and shoulder than some other alternatives.
You're right and if you've read what I said I even second guessed myself by saying I don't know how I would have reacted in that scenario.
Nothing inherently scary I guess, but you could see how an accident might happen even to someone not horsing around. Or, more pertinent to my current scenario, how a young son I take my eyes off of for a second, might "horse around" and have a bad result. I recall a few years back the story and thread on the bbs about the 2 year old that fell and died from a luxury suite I think at Staples Center. Opinions correctly narrowed in on a father that should have been paying better attention, but still, kids will be kids sometimes. And drunk/stupid people will be stupid. So to clarify, I have no hesitation getting on one of those things. I'm not scared of heights or anything like that. Just a general comment on how they seem to have made these escalators increasingly tall and increasing randomly out in the middle of a huge wide open hallway with nothing to "hit" to prevent a fall even if it was to accidentally happen - though to be fair this may be a preventative design choice since if the escalator was placed closer to the walking ramps, or walls or whatever it might encourage people to act dumber.
Who said anything about avoiding a major injury? Of course you'll be hurt badly. The question is how hurt will you be? Like I said, I'm talking the talk but there's no guarantee I can walk the walk.
So, the guy was trying to slide down the railing and fell over the side then? It's a risky move and he paid the price for it. It's not funny at all but it reads like he was being an idiot.
