I liked Clint's speech, I thought it was refreshing. I have never heard a bad word about the man.... However I would love to ask him how comfortable he really is in the Republican party considering he is in favor of gay rights, pro choice and a strong environmentalist that is not a fan of religion.
Gay rights - nothing will change from the status quo in the Romney administration. Pro choice- nothing CAN change from the status quo in the Romney administration (except a possible defunding of FEDERAL funding for organizations that provide abortions, which I don't have a problem with and maybe he doesn't either). Religion - See 1 and 2. Environmentalism - time to face facts, conservation has been hijacked by the crazy greenies and it's killing out economy. Tech just isn't there yet for so-called green energy. Instead of trying to prop up companies that can't exist off the government teat, lets fund continued research for them until they are viable. Let's also not stand in the way of modern fracking and clean coal. If you truly want cheap, abundant, and safe energy independence, those are the best options for America. There are lots of people, like myself, who put social issues on the back burner to face the harsh fiscal reality. We are Greece in a minimum of ten years (and probably close to five) without increasing revenue through economic growth (increasing taxes mathematically are nothing more than a rounding error) and solving the entitlement crisis.
We are not Greece in any shape or form. We have credit, we make things, we export food, we have the world's strongest military and one of the world's most stable political systems that insure that our most valuable commodity, the US dollar. Fiat currency means we can print all we want, what changes is the relative value, of a dollar to a barrel of oil, loaf of bread or a Chinese Yuan. We export military supported dollars for things the same way the Chinese do cheap sweatshop labor supported crap.
This is our current fiscal reality (link only since it's possibly NSFW). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ydqjqZ_3oc
I came into Clint's speech and honestly thought he was getting heckled from the audience. I could definitely hear the "make my day!" yells, but I couldn't hear anyone telling him to tell Mitt to go *** himself. I was wondering why security didn't remove the idiots. Then I realized it was a performance but I still wondered why security didn't do something about it. Also - I am guessing there were outbursts during Mitt's speech and that is why the crowd would start chanting "USA" in the middle of his sentences? Why does Mitt not move his arms during a speech? Not only are they resting on a podium, but his shoulders are lifeless so it doesn't even seem that he is moving his hands or shifting arm weight on the podium. Maybe he is Skynet? My DVR cut out because it ran long and I have not had time to look for it on the web...did he offer any policy towards the end? I only saw the bad economy stuff, the bad Obama stuff, and his personal bio. Oh, and the huge nod to women. I don't think I have ever seen such a focused, "I will hire a bunch of women" statement in a convention speech. I used to enjoy conventions more. Now they just seem so tired, uninspired, and unbelievable. The attacks aren't as creative (in a good way, clever summations or barbed points as opposed to making stuff up or misstating a record). I also can't help but thinking how stupid people in the audience are when the camera cuts to them and they are crying or waving stupid signs or nodding and saying things to themselves in a reverential manner. I will have the same feelings for the Dem convention, by the way, because I mostly did last election cycle as well. But at least last time had a good speech by Palin and a great speech by Obama. I didn't buy either but at least they represented something I could respect.
They've made re-instating & defending DOMA a central plank of their campaign platform. The Obama administration has refused to defend DOMA in court. That's a substantial change. Oh and also...hello, Supreme Court? Hello....Supreme Court? See "Hello...Supreme Court?" Let's face facts. Oh wait, you didn't state any, you are basically spouting random garbage talking points based on speculation and conjecture.. Now let's face some actual facts: And you saved the worst for last. That's not even remotely true on any level, and only somebody who didn't understand anything about economics would think this is a reasonable proposition. Fail.
This statement and the one before it are so ridiculous and untrue. Yes, it is a mostly white crowd, but there was definitely diversity. Whether or not you saw them depends entirely on what channel you watched. I clicked back and forth between MSNBC and FOXnews (loved MSNBC's coverage with Maddow FWIW. Fox acted like it was a big party and didn't offer much real critique). On MSNBC it was obvious the camerawork was intentionally done to show only white faces. They also managed to zoom in on the guy who was telling people when to stand up. On Fox it was black and Hispanic faces consistently. Somewhere between 74 and 80 percent of the electorate this year will be white yet if every other face isn't of color people act like the Republican party is racist and doesn't represent America. LOL
I love Clint's speech, funny and entertaining as hell. Who says white men can not be cool? Clint hits on a raw nerve and that is why you lefties are attacking him. How can you not like the empty chair skit? How can you not like " Go ahead, make my day" ? How can you not like the slashing throat gesture? Clint's speech was exactly what a lot of Americans wanted to say but too scared to say it. After the convention, we broke out Dirty Harry and had everyone say" Go ahead, make my day" in their accent. I had the UN over in my house last night. 30 guests and more than half are immigrants from another country. It was a great night!
The supreme court is not going to overturn RvW, it's NEVER going to happen. In other words - status quo. DOMA is the status quo. It doesn't need to be reinstated, because it's already the law. There won't be a constitutional amendment. Regardless of whether or not an Administration defends it, it will have defense, so it doesn't matter. DOMA will stand or fall on its own merits. DADT is over and is never coming back, the votes aren't there from the REPUBLICANS on the issue. As far as the last one, we are 10 years away from a 100% public debt to gdp ratio (we're actually already there if you include intergovernmental - hello fake SS trust fund). That is Greece. That's we're we fall off the debt cliff and can't borrow anymore. So we print, the dollar bottoms out, our purchasing power falls off the cliff, and we take the whole economic world down the tube. Stop living in the land of unicorns and fairy magic. In the real world, we're in real trouble.
Sure, much like basso threads, the GOP has good black-dar/brown-dar for parading around the occasional Michael Steele or whoever else they can find willing to go against the grain. What does it matter? That has nothing to do with their overall message which is profoundly anti-minority for the last forty years, with a particularly virulent strain in the last 4.... Do you honestly think GOP tokenism is something to brag about?
Below is a link to a panoramic picture of the crowd at the 2012 Republican National Convention. Click the link, zoom in, and count the faces of color. http://www.cnn.com/interactive/2012/08/politics/rnc.gigapan/index.html
I'm blanking on the official name, but I know a few days ago at the convention the Republican's laid out their official agenda or policy, that includes things like their thoughts on gay marriage and abortion. Does anyone have a link to that list?
Until it changes, are you an idiot or trolling or do I even need ask? It's actually not the law, parts have been overturned by lower courts and there's about a dozen ongoing cases on it. Strike two. Great. Then please do us all a favor and then retire to your mattress with your gold doubloons and your Peter Schiff investment account while the grown ups talk about macro.
Romney delivered a good speech but not a great speech. He did what he needed to do regarding introducing himself to the wider American public and I don't think this will hurt him but I don't think it will change much for him. I think Romney was hurt a bit by following Rubio who was outstanding. I can really see why people consider Rubio as the future of the Republican party and IMO he delivered the best speech of the RNC.
