Why do we still have Greg Smith and Diamon Simpson? I hope its just for training. I hate seeing 10th rate scrubs on the roster.

So you're ok with Sean Williams going then?

Fact is, Smith and Simpson have ungauranteed deals, so we can cut them LATER if we want to.
    But why keep them around?
Well, surely it's just in case we want to make some kind of move - unguaranteed salary for matching purposes is quite useful. Including Livingstone, we have something like $6million of salaries that we can match which would only end up counting as $1m if they were all cut.

Has been one of my favourite prospects in the league, too bad he never panned out.

Wish we would've kept him as a backup for Center, but I guess they got coachbadlee's memo and are confident Terrence Jones is the next Dwight Howard.

Greg Smith's deal is 50% guaranteed, meaning that he'd count about $381k or so against the cap if he were waived.

Courtney Fortson and Diamon Simpson have fully non-guaranteed deals with no guarantee date, meaning the Rockets could keep them around throughout training camp and preseason, could waive them just before the regular season and not have them count one penny against the cap.

By contrast, Sean Williams had a $915k deal that was going to become fully guaranteed if he weren't waived earlier this week.

I really don't see what the issue is here, other than giving some posters a chance to whine about how the Rockets' 15th through 19th men are scrubs.

Why are cutting someone who is 6'10 and Blocks shots? We couldnt cut Livingston at 3.5Forbes 1.5 or Brockman who is making 1.0? WTF Williams would have been a nice piece to have on weakside who could have filled the Ibaka shot blocker role.....

That was the case 3 weeks ago and back. Stockpiling assets and non-guaranteed contracts towards a major player.

Though if the Rockets are in rebuild mode, why not keep around the best prospects they can if its not gonna kill their bottom line?

I'm NOT saying Sean Williams is one of those guys you keep around. And yeah you can put $1 mil guaranteed toward something bigger.

But its letting players like Jon Leuer, Harrelson, E'twaun Moore, Sean Williams go who actually have played in the league, Leuer who's actually a decent player, and keeping the Diamon Simpson types around who can't even make a team. All for money.

Rockets out of all teams should know about letting the 15th guy on the bench go for pure money reasons and watching him blow up and being worse off for it. But if it ends up in 2-less wins for tanking purposes then it still works.

Its funny how the 15-19th roster guys (Greg Smith, Jeff Adrien) got some major playing time last season.

The Rockets currently have 19 players on their roster after waiving Williams. NINETEEN.

I think it's safe to say that anyone who is arguably worse than Sean Williams will not be on the final 15-man roster.
