There's a huge difference between "keeping evacs out of the city" and not necessarily wanting to bus them in by the thousands.

Come on. This is a non-story.

It is a non-story, but his reasoning for shooting down the idea of housing evacuees is stupid ('from one danger zone to another'). Puh-lease. I doubt people who have just had their entire life wiped out by a flood are going to give a s**t about whether or not Houston is on the Gulf Coast. His real reason may be more sinister and stupid (i.e. bigtexxxian), but the reason he should have used is that we just don't have the infrastructure to have the city/county participate in such a thing anymore. Private organizations, sure, but not something that is sponsored/run by the municipality.

It follows no logic to bring hurricane evacuees to a city that has the same hurricane problems. The Katrina evacuees shouldn't have even been brought here in the first place. It would be no different than people evacuating a tornado in the midwest to go another city in the midwest frequently hit by tornadoes.

not just gang fights at schools, but more serious crime such as murders rose.

it was a rough time to be in Houston, that's for sure.

question about the Astrodome- isn't it rat and asbestos infested?

I don't know why I forget that in just '05, Houston was using it as an emergency shelter.

can a place that broken down even be considered an option in this day and age?

Except that it isn't easy to move a lot of people very far. Houston is the nearest major metro area to NOLA so it made sense to move a lot of people there. If Kansas City Missouri had to be evacuated because of a tornado they wouldn't move most of the people to LA but to St. Louis.

For all those complaining about Katrina refugees don't forget that Houston also evacuated during Rita and it's very possible that Houston might have to be evacuated again in the future. I highly doubt everyone in Dallas and San Antonio is going to be happy with a big influx of Houston refugees.

I've dealt with him too, and I agree with your assessment of him 110%.

It seems like everyone who ever becomes Harris County Judge turns into a class A prick.

2002 was still worse than 2005 after Katrina.

What is Houston's excuse for 2002?

Sounds like Houston natives need to realize problems have been in Houston before and well after Katrina.

Most of Houston is pretty ghetto. NE Houston is ghetto until you get to kingwood. Southwest houston is ghetto until you get to Sugar Land, same with SE Houston until clearlake. The neighborhoods north of downtown are pretty run down. You have a few decent areas like rice university/ medcenter area/ Parts of midtown until the housing projects and homeless shelter/ parts of Washington/ memorial/ buffalo bayou, but you wouldn't want to go to large parts of Houston at night.

Slightly off topic, but Hurricane Katrina destroys NO and it is the wrath of God being dispensed to the fornicators and preverts for their sins, but Hurricane Isaac hits the RNC and its just bad luck with the weather?
