GQ has quietly developed into a very good safety, and one of my personal favorite Texans. I think that this year he will breakout and become an elite one. But my question is are we going to have the cap room to keep him next year. I would assume that Schaub and Barwin are higher priorities, and with Cushing heading into a contract year next year, I honestly think we will lose him to a team willing to overpay. What are your thoughts on his contact situation?
I was actually just talking to my wife, like she cared. the other day about how good he has looked in preaseason. I dont see why this defense can not be even better with the year already in the system and improvement from all of them.
Dude's great in coverage and great at stuffing runs, what's not to love. Plenty of tough decisions for Rick Smith this coming off season, that's what happens when you draft well though, eventually people need to get paid.
we will just have to borrow some pesos from the eagles' bank. he will be a texan. GQ gives wade a lot of flexibility on pass coverage.
Texans will have some interesting decisions to make the next couple of years. Of course you want to re-sign GQ. There is no young safety behind him who could take over if you let him walk.
I've loved Quin's play since he was a rookie CB and became our best one even while Dunta Robinson was still here. His transition to a safety worried me but he did great last year and this preseason is showing more of the same. I unfortunately think, we are going to lose him unless he is a RFA that we can put a tender on or Barwin comes to us really cheap. We don't have a lot of cap flexibility so we are probably going to lose Quin, Casey and a few others like we lose Winston, Dressen, Williams and Ryans this past off season. The curse of having a great team, come the off season, players and coaches that aren't locked up will get picked by other teams that want quality .
I know Jimmy Graham is a beast but TEs his size will always give the Texans trouble when they're matched with Quinn or a LB.
Does anyone know his contract status? If he's a RFA I have no doubts we retain his services past this season. If he's UFA (like conner) we're likely to lose one of the two. Going to be impossible to sign Matt, Conner and GQ if all 3 are UFA
Fortunately Demps has looked really good this preseason and Troy Nolan is decent, so if we lose Quinn we won't be totally up a creek.
I think Smith and Walter are dead men walking and Barwin is a likely casualty to the cap. I'd agree that Cody's spot is also in danger. Nature of the hard cap beast - you can't give 22 starters $5+M each, even if they deserve it. I would definitely like to see Quin retained if they can manage it.
Not sure what Smith's cap hit is next year but I imagine we could simply cut Smith and retain Barwin. It's a casualty, but definitely a lesser one. I'm also not very knowledgeable about the supposed impending salary cap increase, but I hope it helps.
Hindsight 20/20 and all that right? lol Sorry to bump the thread but everytime I watch the Lions and see how Quin has developed into one of the top five safeties in the league(some might say top 3) I always wonder what could've been. Was the cap situation that dire that off-season?
