Bad idea, worse logic. - .38 special is a marginal pistol round and a terrible rifle round. - .38/.357 mag rifles are made for heavy bullets not light. 130gr bullets will shoot like crap with a 1/16 twist. - .38 special hits 10 inches lower at 100 yards than .357, so switching is not practical - straight wall cartridges are bad for reliability. A .223 in 77gr SKT will have less recoil and have three times the energy at 100 yards than a .357 magnum. Vastly superior.
While that might be true for the kind of shooting you're talking about, it isn't true for the kind of shooting I do. None of the pistol targets I shoot at are more than 100 yards(nor are any of the rifle targets). They are all less than that. If I sight my pistol properly when shooting, I'm able to do pretty well. With the rifle I've done even better (thought by no means am I anywhere close to perfect with For as fast as I need to shoot, my loads need to be that light. I don't have the rifle yet, but I've been using Winchester '73 clones, and Winchester '92 clones. They are all lever action shooting 10 rounds in rapid succession several times. I also shoot at close range for the rifle. All of my bullets are 100% lead and they have to be. If I was able to have the equipment, space and time, I'd probably work on my own ammo and save some money, and might experiment with the grain count. The '92 clones are way cheaper than the '73 clones and if I wasn't shooting so many rounds as fast as I do, I would definitely get one of those. But the '73 clones are slightly more durable when doing that kind of shooting. So I'm inclined to save up for '73. Though if I found an amazing deal on a '92, I'd probably get one.
How many rounds do you guys typically go through each time at the range? It's like ~50 cents every time you pull the trigger.
I go through about 200 rounds, and 80 shotgun shells. That's just a rough guess. When I'm going regularly it's once or maybe twice a month. When I'm super busy, I go about once every 3 months.
Everything I said is based on physics and doesn't change based on what type of shooting anyone does. for instance "For as fast as I need to shoot, my loads need to be that light." you mean you want less recoil, .223 has less recoil than 357mag. Nothing you say really makes much sense and isn't based on anything.
All I'm suggesting is that he may feel the need to shoot a traditional styled lever action. Why are you being such a b**** about this. That time of the month?
Oh, busting FB 's chops for no reason? If he enjoys shooting that way, who cares? Personally, I'd use a Mark V Trooper with .38 loads for target practice. Why? Cheaper to fire, doesn't have quite the kick, which I like at my age. The range I'd want to use it at in "real life" being about 25 yards max, who cares if there's a slight difference between the .38 and .357 loads at 100 yards? True, I don't have an interest in a rifle firing those rounds, but it wouldn't occur to me to bust the chops of someone who does. By the way, note that I didn't call you a b****!
No, cowboy action shooting doesn't use cap guns for any official competitions. I'm not sure what you're talking about. What I'm talking about are the requirements and regulations for the kind of shooting I do, as well as recommendations based on experts in that particular kind of shooting. I'm a relative newcomer myself.
I didn't bust his chops at all. Nothing he said made any sense. Unlike: which does. Saying something doesn't make sense isn't busting anyone chops. Posting in a forum what you have been thinking of buying is an open invitation for advice. You guys are beyond ridiculous. When they shoot balloons riding horses they do.
That's not part of any official CAS competition. Though as a side note, I believe those are the loads they use for those types of demonstrations as opposed to the actual guns themselves. I believe the guns themselves are the same. And what I've said did make sense. I said for the type of shooting I do there is a reason why I use what I use. That for the type of shooting you do, what you were talking about makes sense.
Not really. In retrospect, some of your logic makes even less sense. Also I don't do any shooting. Good luck.
Well, it made perfect sense to me, sorry if it made none to you. I have no idea why you don't do any shooting despite having such an interest in guns. Maybe you're just saying that to avoid having a record online. I don't know. Good luck to you as well.
I've done a lot of cowboy shooting in the past and it's lot of fun. All my colt clones and my 92 are all 38/357. In my opinion it's the best caliber for the sport. Which club do you shoot with? I havent shot in 10 years but have been thinking about getting back into it.
I'm in So Cal. The main one I go to are called The Cowboys. There's another one that's actually a little closer, but I don't go as often to that one.
