I've read many of his books including this one. He's a good writer (obviously) and this story is a good one although its probably about 200 pages too long. Will probably be made into a movie one day.
I just finished Tooth & Nail and the Infection by Craig Delouie.. currently half way through The Killing Floor. If you like a great zombie series.. this is it.
Long thread so I don't know if it has been mentioned but I just finished Divergent and Insurgent by Veronica Roth. Looking forward to the final book of the trilogy.
That series sounds really interesting. I think I'll wait for the final book to come out and read them all in order if the reviews are good. I've read a few series lately that unraveled at the end, and I wouldn't have bothered if I had known the ending was going to be subpar.
Reading The Devil in the White City and In the Garden of Beasts both by Erik Larson. Both have been awesome so far.
I have been able to read a few of the books recently touted in this thread and wanted to weigh in on a few of them (BTW - thanks in advance). I think my favorite was 'The Art of Racing in the Rain' - It was the kind of book that keeps you wanting more. This story told from the perspective of an aging family dog is simply endearing and beautifully written. Though it is not really the point or central plot of the book, the racing scenes and subsequent comments when there is a race are invigorating and will draw in even the most casual fan (or non-fan) to the sport. A surprising spin is that the dog keeps a top ten list (kinda like in High Fidelity) where he rates his favorite movies, races etc that I have since been following up on. I can't really do this book any justice I realize, so read for your self; you wont be sorry. 'The Book Thief' I did not like as well at first. For sure it will draw you in and make you think... There is really quite a lot to digest here. The problem I had is that it seemed over the top with all the little drawings and stories within the stories and then I remembered towards the end it was targeted to teen readers. One would not think so at first blush... The story is full grown and probably a more complex read than most adults (sadly) will ever enjoy. I hope this is not considered a slight, but it came to remind me a little of Stephen Kings' earlier books like 'The Stand'. All in all it's a great read and I learned a lot in the reading. I also read 'The Shadow of the Wind'. Another great book I may have never read if not for this forum. There has been much written of it here and elsewhere, so I will not elaborate except to mention how much I enjoyed it and the well written and interesting characters... Truly a great book that I believe Ruiz Zafon is having a hard time matching. Subsequent books of his have been a let down. I'm reading, actually re-reading 'Home Land' by Sam Lipsyte' right now. I could not possibly recommend it any more. As Chuck Palahnniuk wrote of it " I laughed out loud - and I never laugh out loud". It's kinda hard to tell you what it's about, as I am not so sure myself. Mostly it's a twisted tale of a guy who can't get his former high school to print up his lewd and disturbing submissions to the school newsletter (some years later), and the subsequent events surrounding his school-mates and teachers. One final thing, I've been reading 'A Prayer For Owen Meany' off and on because I have a big-ass, hardback edition I got from the library and have to keep renewing. It's just too much a hassle to carry around or hold in bed... Guess I'm just a p***y as it's a great book and a little discomfort is not much a price to pay.
Ask the Awakened -The Negative Way by Wei Wu Wei. This was a very dense book to read after a long week at work. It's basically a bunch of essays and passages about on Eastern philosophy, Buddhism, parts of Hinduism, and other similar idea systems. If you like reading about truth, existence, and illusions of reality, give this a try after reading a primer on Eastern thinking.
I loved Divergent!! I am going to start on Insurgent once I get my hands on it. Waiting for the final book will be a torture.
