He's not going to be any better than Scolandry in the best case scenario. That's not a star. He's a fair but undersized bench big. All he does for us is take 20-30 mpg away that could go to Motiejunas or Jones.

The Spurs weren't going to pay money for Scola's buyout and therefore traded him away. I also remember a heavy rumor/speculation of it being also a part of us losing one of our assistant coaches to SA a few weeks before this trade but I can't find that link anywhere.

This the way I feel. I still remember how well PPat played during his rookie year here. I say we give him one more year-- he's a smart, motivated player, which is rare in the young guys (not our young guys, just in general) and go from there.

Damn draft picks we arent a dleague team ! This team isnt attractive because they are losers so tanking just makes it worse. Rebuilding is the route needed and being trash dump for other teams and 2nd round picks

The worst thing we could do is sell low on PPat. We didn't endure a painful season to get the lottery pick (PPat) only to trade him for garbage to one of our rivals. I'm down on PPat just like the majority of people here but that doesn't mean I want fair value for him in return. Gary freaking Neal is NOT fair trade value. I'd rather call Rick Brunson and call it a day.

Neal would make sense even though he's more of an off guard because the Rockets probably see Royce White as a point forward for the 2nd unit off the bench. That would be the best way to use him as he has very little usefulness when playing off the ball as he's a non-shooter (and which is why I don't see him as a starter in this league, especially playing with a PG that is a creator in Lin). Neal is a bench guy, but he has shot over 40% on 3's in both of his NBA seasons. With White's vision and ability to find people, guys like Neal and Delfino become very useful as 2nd unit players. No one should be expecting Neal to be anything more than that. But to say "he's not good" is inaccurate and simply not true. As the Spurs have shown, good role guys are very important to having success.

And I understand not wanting to "sell low" on Patterson, but what if Jones and White beat him out for PT? Then you'll have a former #14 pick with very little value. This is basically what has happened to Marcus Morris. The kid kid isn't a bad player, but his value is so low because he hasn't played. If the pick is a 1st Rounder, I'd do it. If it's a first Rounder from the Spurs, it might actually be a good pick. Duncan and Ginobili aren't getting any younger. The Spurs won't be great forever.

Lol @ gary neal not being good. When he gets hot he can be a very good scorer off the bench and there were some games where he kept them in the game when pop took the starters out. I still like patterson and don't want to see him go. Despite that, I think it's funny you guys want to "sell patterson high" like he's such a valuable piece but then turn around and say a player who averaged 10 points a game, can put up 20+ when he gets minutes, and was a solid contributer on a team that was 34 games over .500 sucks.

How is he undersized? His combination of size, wingspan and vertical is pretty good.

    Quick question...

This deal would make more sense if Tor. took the restrictions off the Kyle Lowry pick, making it Unprotected for us.

    Is this allowed?

Good post. I was wondering what I was reading about Neal being garbage, while a 44% jump shooting big man who can't even box out is some kind of world beater.

PPat for Spurs unprotected 2014 pick. Timmy D retires, Manu gets injured, we luck into top pick.....oh to dream!

I would love to get as many unprotected 1 picks in 2014 from teams that are bad or soon to be bad.

Very good for a SF. Lacking for a PF. 6-9, 7-1 wingspan, and you are probably the first person I've ever seen impressed by his vertical. Crummy defensive rebounding, little to no post game or post defense. He is a steady jumper shooter and good effort guy, but star? No way. Will never happen.

allowed. don't see much point though, the chance of it becoming top 3 would require extreme lotto luck. is it worth giving up assets?
getting a second restricted future pick, even a lotto restricted, would make more sense IMO.

    I second that.

There is zero urgency for the Rockets to move Patterson at this point of his career, and at this point of the rookie forward's careers. Patterson is not an overpaid veteran who has maxed out his abilities as an NBA player. He's still a young, developing player with alot of potential on a rookie scale contract.

Add to that the fact that the Rockets have already invested alot of time and resources into developing him as a player. At this point it just doesn't make sense to move him for someone like Gary Neal(especially for basketball reasons) they are getting a major asset in return.... like a pick that projects higher than the 14th pick in the draft(where Patterson was drafted). Thats really the only way to justify this move.

At this point I would do anything to unload a PF.
