thinking about picking this game up. never played the previous one. so this is basically free to play after buying the game?
first time logging in yesterday because they were doing a stress test, i was getting bad fps like 10-20fps, i have SLI'd GTX260's and it didn't matter whether i enabled or disabled SLI, i hope it's just because it's still in beta mode... *edit, i was also running it on auto-detect for the graphic options

Blackgate seems like it should have a pretty nice community of players from online message boards. I'm going to be doing a lot of WvW so I want to land on a server that competitive. Crystal Desert which was mentioned looks solid as well. http://www.gw2guilds.org/overview At least they are allowing free server transfers for a few weeks after launch so people can decide.
Everyone needs to join Blackgate. I'll create the guild unless someone else wants to do it. We gotta guild up quick since guilds actually give you guild-wide buffs if you join up and starting earning xp in it.
i still can't decide if i want to do warrior or engineer first but i didn't want to play too much of warrior or engineer during the BWEs because i didn't want it spoil myself GRRRR
Does anybody know what the difference is between servers? What does it matter on which server i'm playing? I'm starting with a Mesmer Norn. But there is a good chance I'll make a ranger very soon (you can have a snow leopard as a pet) .
This is true. I just hope the framerates get better when it releases or else I'll be fighting the temptation of building a new rig!
You can only interact and play with friends if you are on the same server with them. You can't switch servers.
That is not totally correct. You can play PvE and PVP (not WvW) with anyone on any other server using the Guest feature. You can also transfer servers at any time using the server transfer service. I'm going to be rolling several professions to start and leveling each to 7 to get the weapon swap skill. From there I'll likely take them to WvW and do a lot of sPvP over the weekend. Going with - Norn Warrior Charr Guardian Human Elementalist I'll do more PVE later.
Yea I remember watching a recent video where someone explains the only reason there are servers is because of hardware limitations(3 million people in Divinity's Reach is bad), and WvW you can join multiple guilds and play with people from different servers, and even join guilds from other servers(?) although I'm not yet sold on that, because WoW pre cross-server bg/dungeon/raids were a lot better... this is why there's a big fuss about not seeing enemy players' names in WvW
They really optimized this game for the better. I was getting like 20fps on medium settings during BWE2. I just played the stress test and I was getting 40fps on everything maxed! Took some screens from the stress test:
