I'd give the last spot to Holliday.

Wouldnt be shocked at all if Martin is the #2 by the end of the season. Flat out steal by Rick in the 4th rd.

They've made it pretty obvious they value Walter's catching and blocking ability at number two.

Unless AJ goes down, I don't see Martin jumping Walter because they bring almost completely different skills sets to the table.

Kubiak says that because he's not the kind of coach that rips his players. If that kid is the big playmaker that everyone says he is then Walter will be taking his great blocking ability at #3. Most likely his last yr here anyway because he most definitely will be released in the offseason.

We get an extra spot because having Graham and Casey we don't need a third TE this year.

I think we keep Trindon. We won't be running any 6 WR sets but his special teams play will win him the spot

I'm afraid they play it safe and stick with Bryant Johnson over Trindon.

    AJ
    Walter
    Martin
    Jean
    Posey
    Johnson

When do we have to make a decision?

If Trindon makes a few more big plays in the return game, I don't see how you let someone like that go.

His value as a blocker is over rated by some Texan fans. The Texans forced him to take a pay cut this season. His cap hit would be 3 million if they cut him this season. His cap hit is 3 million if they keep him this season. To me that is writing on the wall that he just isn't a good enough receiver to remain on this team with blocking alone for too much longer.

I think Walter will hang onto his spot this season, but I don't see it as a lock. I think the Texans want Posey to be able to take his spot next season even though Posey is behind Martin in receiving.

Nah. It's not like B. Johnson did anything last season. If Holliday returns another one (punt or kickoff) this preseason, its pretty much a lock he will be on the team. Would keep Manning and Martin fresh also, plus he would still be depth at wide receiver. Throw him some bubble screens and let him squirm his way to a td ala Sproles.

Don't understand why it matters if Trindon Holliday can play wide receiver. How many times is a #6 WR going get on the field? If you end up needing a real wide receiver because of a injury, just cut him at that time. His job will be to return punts and kicks. And clearly he is the best guy for the job.

Yep. The Patriots just got Jeff Demps for exactly the same reason. It's no coincidence that they like the Texans were at the bottom of the league in the returning game.

He may be the best guy on the team for returns but that'll have to be matched against depth concerns at other positions. It's real hard to carry a one trick pony in the National Football League.

Jeff Maehl can play WR and return kicks. Grimes can be RB4 and return kicks. Manning can return kicks. Martin can return some. I was under the assumption Keshawn Martin will start taking some turns at returning later in the pre-season.

Right now the FO is seeing if anyone rises up and forces their hand on a roster spot, whether that be Holliday or someone at another position. He's done a great job so far, but he'll have to make it "we'd be crazy not to keep him" scenario.

I understand what you are saying but I believe Holiday can be a game changer as a returner. My point is won't be asked to play wide receiver as the 5th/6th option. Texans carry a long snapper, kicker, and punter. They are one trick ponies. Texans will likely only carry 3 backup offensive linemen since Ben Jones can play both Center and Guard and Newton can play both left and right tackle. I think that will give them an extra roster spot to work with.

And you'd better believe they're not looking to carrying another one. If they could carry one guy who did kicks and punts well they'd probably carry just one kicking specialist. If they had a backup lineman who could long snap well, they'd cut that position too.

Not trying to throw Holliday under the bus but having a dedicated returner when so many others can do the job is a luxury. It's the same logic as Plax.

Who are the others that can do the same job? You mentioned Maehl and Grimes but I have never seen either of them return kicks before. Manning is very good kick returner as proven last year. I wouldn't mind seeing him back there if Holiday gets cut. But never been a big fan of starters playing special teams. Keshawn Martin was a very good returner in college and I am sure he could do a good job. I guess this whole situation will play itself out in the preseason.
