You would be right...if that was what he said. Only in crazy wingnutland are people gullible enough to think that is what he said.

Why does Romney always have to distort and take things out of context to make a point?

He was probably 15 when he read it. Heck, I was younger than that. Somehow, it didn't "take."

I cant fathom why Obama is even close to being re-elected. Really, I dont understand who would re-elect him as President.

Except for that Romney probably isnt the best choice from the Repubs.

For starters, probably all the people who don't think cutting taxes on the wealthy and cutting services for the poor is the heart of the solution to our economic problems.

Both sides are doing it because it works.

Feining the moral high ground doesn't win any impartiality points.

Compared to the rest of the world, particularly since after the Cold War, we have a stable enough country that we could probably see two-term presidents for the next 20 or 30 years. The only risk is if middle class white college grads are unable to get professional jobs in drastically low proportions, like less than 50% five years after graduation, and hourly jobs still don't have benefits or decent wages. I believe women and minorities were indirectly protesting economic issues in the '60s and '70s; then blacks and soccer moms in the late '80s/early '90s.

    Differences:

    1. Obama immediately corrects the mistake.
    2. Obama is clearly the leader of the ticket.
    3. Romney introduces Ryan, probably has an aid whisper into his ear that he screwed up, has to interrupt Ryan to make amends in an awkward way.
    4. By selecting Ryan, Romney has put himself in the position of running on his VP's ideas, not his own. Ergo, the mistake reinforces the idea that Romney is a cipher and not a leader.

    Same flub, much different result.

A liberal choosing a conservative as VP to strengthen his base. It's a replay of 2008 with socialist state healthcare. If he rolls back the Marxist healthcare policies in his state, it might work out better this time.

Coming in late to this thread but I giver Romney for making a risky political move. Romney has pretty much played it very safe this election and this was the type of bold move that he needed to make. This could backfire on him badly but without it he was pretty much being defined as rich and out of touch with little reason to vote for him from the base except that he wasn't Obama.

Well, this is off topic, but I'll take a go at this. Obama pretty much has my vote in the bag, especially now that Romney chose this VP.

I don't really cotton to a lot of the attacks on Obama.

    1. He's not anything close to a socialist. He has the political compass of someone like Ike, Gerald Ford, or Bob Dole. He's just pretty much pragmatic and centrist, in the face of a fairly radical right wing. That's how I see it.

    2. The new economy is not his fault, and I think the data shows that America is much better off than Europe primarily due to the stimulus. We can disagree, but I believe that.

    3. I'm not a fan of the healthcare overhaul, but I'm someone who has seen a lot of the healthcare system, with dozens of friends deeply imbedded in the system, and we all wanted something more radical. So, the healthcare law is a start, and objective analysis shows it will save the country money over time (despite hyperbolic partisan rhetoric about it.)

    4. I think he's totally correct about wealth distribution in this country. it's more massively screwed up than even the America of 1890 or 1928, and that's saying something.

I don't think he's as good as someone like Reagan or Clinton at connecting with a broad swath of American citizens. I do think he comes off as preachy and aloof sometimes. But I see those as mostly aesthetic details, and they won't determine my vote.

I'm sure you think I'm nuts, but I just wanted to make an honest try to explain why a lot of people might be able to vote for him in this election. Keep in mind, I only read a lot. I don't watch any TV news, ever, so that might make me especially odd.

Someone needs to put the blame where it belongs; on the same people who are fundraising in massive numbers for Romney.

I wish more people knew about things like the implications of LIBOR...if that were the case the little dinner Romney had with Barclays reps would make him unelectable.

I love how our resident academic can be so intellectually lazy when providing his economic opinions? "It's not his fault"? You're blinded by "Oblamer" bias. He has had 4 years and has proven that he cannot work across the aisle. Unemployment is truly a national disgrace and Obama hasn't lowered it as his team promised. He's failed.

Charging others with intellectual laziness, while posting the same exact talking point he has the last 695095 times.

Romney doubling down on stupid like a real conservative. I don't think it's going work but we'll see if the country wants to double down on stupid too.
