We all know Superstar teams build interest in a sport for the casual fan.
The 'league' will be happy that the national games and playoff viewership will be way up and everyone gets a payoff from the tax and TV money.

It's like there are now 25 Donald Sterling's cashing checks.

... and more proof that the Rockets are in damage control mode. Obviously they're spinning it to the media that they had the better deal offered, but I think it's more logical that they played hardball and lost.

And I hate to pick nits here, but the Rockets don't have a "guaranteed" lottery pick... it's a likely lottery pick. Good pick, yes -- but Toronto technically could make the playoffs 6 straight years and in 2018, it's wherever the pick falls. Nothing's "guaranteed".

That's why I refused to hop on the "No worries, Dwight WILL come to Houston" train. Like you said, there are so many unknown factors to be that sure about something. You are only setting yourself up for a huge disappointment when it doesnt happen as expected.

I wasn't anti Dwight, but I'm not surprised he didn't end up in Houston.

I agree with it being damage control But I see not benefit for the magic in the current deal. They would be better off playing out the season with Howard and letting him walk or revisiting the trade during the deadline (maybe OKC would enter the mix).

Magic made a move that made sense for D12 not the org.

Oh, come on, Clutch. That's like saying that it isn't guaranteed the Lakers won't make the playoffs this year.

There was no way they were going to go into training camp with d12 still on the team. Its negates their rebuilding process to have a guy that major of a piece, and refuses to be there. Better to start rebuilding as soon as possible.

Not even close. Heck, the Raptors could also win the lottery and not give up that pick. Imagine if they won a top 3 pick this year after being mediocre that helped set up their best run since VC was a star.

I doubt Feigen would shoot himself in the foot by making a statement with that kind of finality. That could bite him in the ass a few ways in the near future should that happen.

I think it's more likely that there were talks between the Howard camp and Rockets FO to get a "feel" for each others position on the trade (due diligence) and DH's camp basically told them that there were zero assurances and that DH had other preferrences. That would've decreased the Magic's leverage on the Rox and shifted DH towards one of his preferred destinations. No need to threaten and crap on the team he was ditching when dissuading was enough.

Both of those Knicks picks looked good in 2011 and 2012 also. Likely lottery at some point, yes... but I consider guaranteed to be guaranteed, and it's not guaranteed.

They could have put him on the IR and made him sit until his back "healed" or until he's traded mid-season. Whichever came first.

I think what everyone is forgetting is that the route the Magics are taking. The most import part of the trades were 2 things. Draft picks and cap clearing contract but the most important part of the trade was their OWN Draft. They went full on tank, they will have 2-3 years of good draft picks and Next years pick and a bunch of good tradeable contracts for after this year... makes them a player in free agency next year.

The remaining contracts with Orlando were 2 year left, which means they will have a bunch of expiring contracts for the 2013-2014 year. Orlando knows this year is going to be a crap shoot so they set them selves up with 20M in cap space next year with a bunch of expiring deals and 3 first pick + their own and 2 second round picks.

If the Rox don't get someone this year. They will have to battle ORL for a possible destination for free agency.

Looks like that cyberx guy was right.

Agents have tons of pull, and the Orlando FO didn't want to burn bridges/felt some weird sense of loyalty to Dwight.

The NBA is really going downhill. It hurts to watch this.

I was 100% convinced Dwight was coming to Houston. All of Morey's actions since the end of the season signaled he was going all in on Dwight. There's no way he couldn't and didn't put an offer on the table that trumps this crappy deal.

I think agents have power in the NBA. A lot of power. But I don't think Fegan alone had the juice to sway this thing to LA by threatening Orlando that they'd never get another one of his players again. I just don't think an NBA organization would crumble to that threat.

I do think the thing we're overlooking is this: Dwight... "knew where the bodies were buried", so to speak, in Orlando. I think he threatened everyone from the owner on down the line to "tell all" about the crap that went on with SVG, the backroom dealings, the way certain things we're handled. I think he would have embarressed them, ruined their reputations in basketball circles, and thrown that whole franchise into upheaval unless they sent him to a desired destination.

I think Houston would have had to sell the farm to get Orlando to call Dwights bluff. I don't think we were willing to do that. I think Orlando's top management from the owner on down gave the green light to take a moderately lesser deal to keep the peace.

I also wouldn't be surprised if they knew this up front and Hennigan was the designated scapegoat. The guy is 30 freakin years old and gets a GM job in the NBA?? No matter how well trained he is I think they wanted him to take the hit if this blows up in their face (and it probably will).
