According to your quoted link, certain items are only partially shared. For example, half of the arena naming right is shared and another half goes to Les. The Toyota naming right provides 50 million to Les/organization. Same for arena signage.

Yeah, but it more complicated than saying all that money goes into a pool and divided evenly. BRI is not the same as owner-to-owner revenue sharing.

I used to think the same thing, until the lockout made things more clear.

BRI merely states what share of revenue the players get from the owners revenue. It does not define revenue sharing between the owners of what is left over. Some revenue is indeed league-wide and gathered and negotiated by the NBA, and that is split evenly. Others is negotiated by the team.

How they share between big market and small market is actually highly secret and not really part of the CBA nor Coon's FAQ, because it has nothing to do with the Union or Players.

Not really.., that half goes into a calculation to determine the amount of revenue the players get.

It doesn't mean owners write a check to the league equal to their BRI. it just means that is what the players are guaranteed to make in sum in salary.

BRI is not owner-to-owner revenue sharing plan. The owner's revenue sharing is secret and of no business to the Player's Union, so it is not part of the CBA nor Coon's FAQ.

    International brand

During the period of Linsanity many executives, managers of a lot of local brands went to Lin's uncle's home in Taiwan. They all wanted to sponsor Lin with an endorsement like VOLVO. Then a rumor reportedly there was a huge number money from one of those brands wanted to support Lin. I saw a reporter asked his uncle about the rumor on TV, his uncle nodded.

Only the global brand can afford to pay such a price.

    ESPN:
Maxxis Tires, a tire brand whose global headquarters are based in Taiwan.

And in other news, Maxxis Tires purchased the main sponsorship rights to the Toyota Center, which will now be called ...

R2K, I believe you are mistaken.

There are two different types of "sharing" of money in the NBA.

First, there are some income, such as national TV money and jersey sales (other than those sole in a team's own arena) that are 100% shared among teams-- i.e. the league takes that money and split it 30 ways. It doesn't matter that the Miami Heat are on ESPN/TNT much more often than, say, the Milwaukee Bucks or that Lakers jerseys sell a lot more than Sacramento Kings jerseys, each team gets 1/30th of these types of money (actually, it's 1/31st when it comes to the National TV money because of this: http://galleyslaves.blogspot.com/2006/08/nbas-most-profitable-franchise-st.html, but the point remains that each team gets an equal share).

Second, there is the money that, for the most part, belongs to each team with only a part of such revenue subject to a "revenue sharing" agreement among teams as set forth by item 24 of the CBA FAQ that you linked to above: http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q24. This type of money include, as your link says, (a) broadcast rights money (I understand this to mean local TV/radio rights), (b) gate receipts at home games, and (c) sponsorship $s. As set forth in item 24 of the FAQ, teams contribute a portion of such money, subject to an upper limit in terms of absolute $s.

Think about it, it wouldn't make any sense for local TV rights money and home game gate receipts, each of which are listed in the link you quoted along with sponsorship $s, to be 100% shared. If these $s were 100% shared, the "small market teams" like SAC and MIL would basically have the same revenue as the Lakers and the Knicks, who can charge a ton more at the gates and for local TV rights than the Kings and Bucks. And we know this is not the case.

So, this Maxxis sponsorship $ is a lot more like the Rockets home game gate receipts (i.e. subject only to a limited form of "revenue sharing) than out of arena sales of Lin jerseys (split 30 ways among all teams). It does make a much larger difference to the Rockets bottom line than it does that of any other NBA team.

    Carl Herrera,

Thanks for pointing about #24 from Coon. Do you know where Coon got his info? As I understand, and as he says "The league's revenue sharing plan works in parallel with the CBA," the revenue sharing plan is not detailed in the CBA. Did the league detail it somewhere? This announcement describes it as separate, too.

    http://www.nba.com/2011/news/12/08/labor-deal-reached/index.html

Also, do you know where to download a copy of the CBA. nbpa.org still only offers the 2005 one.

Are you guys ready for this ... All you hometown boys who hated the YOF and Yao fetish ... it's going to get worse with Lin. He is going to bring politics in GARM pretty soon. Sum it up, it's gonna be about whether China is Tawain's daddy. Mark my words.
