    Omer Asik #14

    14. Omer Asik (year-by-year breakdown undisclosed) – Chicago Bulls
    2012-2013: $8,333,333
    2013-2014: $8,333,333
    2014-2015: $8,333,333

Omer Asik is underrated: he ranked sixth in rebound rate last season and is an extremely strong defensive presence. But is he worth more than $8 million per season? On a contender, maybe. On the rebuilding Rockets, who seem less and less likely to land Dwight Howard, definitely not. Varejao and Asik could be easily flip flopped, depending on your preference. I’m considering the Asik deal slightly worse, if only because Varejao has maintained high rebounding numbers (7.2 per game for his career) through his career. Asik’s 14.7 minutes per game last season somewhat mitigates that sixth best rebounding rate.

It is a three year deal, at an average of 8 million a season, so it is not a long term cap killer. Further, it is at the hardest to fill position (center) and the highest paid position for production.

Asik still has quite a bit of upside, and excels at the two most important skills for a center (defense and rebounding). I don't think his contract is a steal, but I am okay with it. I am confident the Rockets can find a taker if necessary.

Whenever I watch Asik in the game he just seems the change the flow immediately. He's going to be a good player for us this season and big man are overpaid anyways

Even though I watched some of his replays. I still can't see Asik's game similar to Yao's like Morey compared him to. Can anyone enlighten me what's his upside and why does Morey believe he's worth this much of money? He barely played last season avg less than 10 min? Whom's game can his game relate to?

Its not like we're in cap hell either. Even with "overpaid" Asik we still one of the most flexible cap rooms in the league.

That is dumb logic. A contender would have some stars and bigger salaries and a much more bloated team salary. The Rockets don't have that and will be operating close to league minimum if they don't land anything big. Add that it is only three years and it makes less sense.

Asik might still be overpaid, but if anything the Rockets can more easily afford to overpay him.

These lists are really stupid with regards to NBA contracts. There are so many ridiculous rules and exceptions that make it impossible to pay a player what they're worth.

This is a really good break down on what he can contribute to the Rockets. I don't know if you have seen it before.

You rarely pay a player what they are worth or what they have earned. You pay them what they are able to leverage.

to the naked eye and to those that do not have a clue about mauryballin, yeah i guess asik is overpaid. But once you factor in the presence of a smart defensive center and how he will rebound/alter shots/spark the fast break, Asik will feel like a bargain at 8 mil.

Also,90 % of the nba is overpaid including the commissar.

The author is pretty accurate on most of them.

A young productive starting center is going to command a salary of roughly $10 mil. Asik is on the low end of that average, so it's not out of line.

Morey suggested that we have not had strong consistent interior defense since Yao. Any interior defense we have had since Yao has been inconsistent due to it being provided by veterans who could not play significant minutes.

In this respect, Morey is exactly correct.

The minutes per game were due to the starter he was playing behind.

I love having him on our team. Especially if we can get a quality starting big man and he becomes our backup. At a difficult to fill position he is someone who can start while rebuilding and come off the bench without sacrificing interior defense and rebounding.

    What's not to like?

Just watched the videos and read the analysis. He's good defensively. But has no offensive games? Or did he not play enough offensive games to be analyzed? How is his post up game? Does he have range? I feel that we are overpaying if he's only got defensive games. How much was Chuck Wagon paid when he was around?

As much as I adore chuck for his defensive abilities, Asik is 7 foot and can easily average 2+ blocks per game. Chuck may have gotten a block from time to time from the weakside, but he couldnt do what Asik can do above the rim on defense.

Teams overpay for that ability all the time, the only way Asik isnt worth his contract is if he totally fails to increase his production with increased minutes.
