Whoa, I don't understand the hate here. This is not the first time a high pick had passed on a large signing bonus. Do I think he's dumb? Yes. Do I hate him for being dumb? C'mon....
Couple of days old, but....

Astros looking to sign Preston Tucker (7th rd.) in the next week, GM Jeff Luhnow said. Its just the way he went about it. He should of just took the Pirates money and make up for it later.
Considering Williams went 93rd, I am glad they did not pick him number 1. Is Correa white? And, for the most part, the Astros (as with all major league teams) tend to draft mostly white players.
Did I say anything that wasn't true of every single major league team and, by extension, every single major league team owner? Please name one team that drafted more black players than white players. Do you realize that this is the first time ever a Puerto Rican has been drafted #1 overall? EDIT: And the Astros are right on par with the number of black in the MLB with 8% of their roster (2 players) being black. This is a baseball problem, not a Jim Crane problem.
Of course, it wouldn't be just Crane. Every single member of the front office involved in the draft (30 or so people including the scouts) would also have to be OK with an edict from the owner to not draft players solely based on skin color. Do you really think that is possible? You are delusional.
I can't believe so many reputable members are taking the time to respond to this idiot. It's quite obvious he got lost and cannot find his way back to the GARM.
What makes it even more ridiculous is that the consensus "safe" No. 1 pick this year was Mark Appel, and the Astros passed up the opportunity for a "white" face of the franchise to draft Correa.
I think we all recognize that the Astros farm system is short on top pitching prospects (but starting to become deep in quality hitters). Some hope is coming from the 2012 draft class, already, though. Some fantastic starts. Stats current through last night. Sandwich pick Lance McCullers (RHP at Greenville) -- 1.20 ERA, BAA of .193 3rd round pick Brady Rodgers (RHP at Tri City) -- 2.38 ERA, almost 1K/IP 13th rd pick Brian Holmes (LHP at Tri City) -- 2.40 ERA, sub-1 WHIP, BAA of only .163 15th round pick Erick Gonzales (RHP at Rookie GCL) -- 0.96 ERA 17th round pick Aaron West (RHP at Tri City) -- 1.05 ERA, WHIP well under 1, BAA of .195 22nd round pick Kenny Long (LHP at Tri City) -- 1.88 ERA, BAA of .089! 23rd round pick Travis Ballew (RHP at Tri City) -- 1.04 ERA, BAA of .153
omg the race card? really? can you pull your head out your 1965 underpants and wake up to current realities, pretty please?
I wouldn't read too much into this draft class's results yet. Post-draft results are notoriously unreliable. We've had several pitchers from previous drafts do well in short season ball but bomb in full season ball the next year (e.g. Jonas Dufek, Kyle Hallock, Thomas Shirley). Especially with regards to this draft class because Luhnow/Heck drafted a bunch of polished college arms who should be dominating that level (being 2-3 years older than the average age at that level). Lance Mc is the only guy I see as a TOR pitcher thus far. Brady Rodgers should be a strong BOR pitcher. The rest will likely be organizational depth with maybe 1-2 other guys making spot starts or getting spots in the pen. I would be stoked if one of the college arms made the jump next season from BOR ceiling to MOR ceiling like Nick Tropeano did. Unlikely though.
Thomas Shirley never bombed. Thomas Shirley got hurt. This is his first real season in Lexington, and he is doing work.
