Are you serious? THere's a bunch of related videos. Well I guess if it's true I won't feel bad that her family got past me just like they got past ABC and The Ellen Show's production staff....
My wife and I have done a lot for the Autism Community. We have a severely Autistic son. Our son is trapped in a world alone. He thinks and feels things that he doesn't have the ability to express because of a crippling condition. He acts out in a manner that most people can't grasp. We have friends who have children diagnosed with Mental r****dation and we don't feel that condition is any better or worse than a diagnosis of Autism. They both suck. We do think it's bull**** for people to toss that word around like you just did. If you don't know that it's hurtful to those families, I just told you and now you do. Families with special needs children and or adults have it rough enough without having to hear derogatory terms like that thrown about.
I have a close family member with Autism that goes to a special school in the city where I live, so I can definitely relate. I have a neighbour with a mentally challenged kid and live next to a place for these people, I'm around them every day and had talks with a lot of them. Just think it's a bit strange to jump on somebody because of one word, especially when I tried to make a case for everyone involved and said I hope this educates people.
I had an wandering thought about the idea of sensory overload that is autism. Maybe it's an early glitch of evolution? Maybe the human brain will evolve to a point were it can and will to take in as much information as an autistic mind will. I don't know, it's just a weird theory I have.
Look, I accept your apology. Using the R word while defending the special needs community is akin to using the N word while defending the African American community.
Our brain prevents us from overloading by sorting out unneccessary information and filtering the important one, so that it can work well without malfunctions. I think it's more a problem of these people that their brains can't filter input/information, overload and make them have those ticks and spark problems focusing on social things, etc.

Daniel Tammet for those that think autism = "r****d". The guy is amazing. There are better/longer videos about him, but here's one to get started : <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Xd1gywPOibg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
I will say this, I think autism is thrown around loosely, based on my limited exposures to it. Case in point.. We have a family member that has twins and one acts up all the time, doesn't listen doesn't do anything you tell them... They don't discipine the kid at all though... They say he's mildly autistic, or has add... I think they just need to step up as parents some and not have the mom coddle the kid to death and let him get away with murder. I just feel that in SOME instances people look for add or "mild autism" as an easy way out to bad parenting. I'm sorry if this offends some, I do believe there is a difference between r****ded and autistic, and both are very real.
How do you explain such differing behavior in those twins? Why does one seem to need more discipline or is that they are not adequately responsive to discipline?
aceshigh, let me just say this, as a parent of a child with autism, if you were to say that around me, no way to sugar coat this, I would hit you so hard that you wouldn't be around any more to make such an offensive comment. Oh, "and I don't care who says differently". And yes I would do it just to make myself feel better.
The criterion for both Autism and attention deficits are both well established in the DSM IV, that family member should go and get an evaluation from a psychologist or pediatrician. Attention disorders (although over diagnosed) can hinder that twins development and is easily rectified by medication Autism is obviously very challenging to live with irrespective of its severity. Don't dismiss a concern, get it checked out, it could make a significant difference to a child's quality of life and their future
I know this phrase gets thrown around way too much here to the point where it loses it's effect......but I can honestly say that Aceshigh7's post in this thread is literally the DUMBEST thing I've EVER seen posted on this forum. No hyperbole. Dumber than ToyCen's 9/11 theories. Dumber than paulftsk's...well, any post by paulftsk. Dumber than anything I've ever seen in the GARM. Seriously, it's that DUMB.
