Crazy, this provides real inside on these people and shows how wrongly we look at them.

I know it's an unpopular viewpoint, but in my opinion, autism is merely another, more socially acceptable word for mental r****dation. There is a stigma attached to having a r****ded child, therefore the term autism came into use.

They are one and the same. And I don't care who says differently.

What the hell are you talking about, my brother is not mentally r****ded, they are two different things. By the way only 75% of kids who suffer from autism also have any level of mental r****dation.

 

If it makes you feel better to call it autism, by all means go right ahead. If I had a r****ded child, I would probably choose to refer to them as autistic just like you do.

 

We don't typically call r****ded children by that term anymore in this society, it's now more acceptable to call it autism.

Much in the same way that colored or negro is no longer an acceptable way to refer to an African-American.

Standards and socially acceptable terms change. But defects resulting in stunted cognitive development remain the same, no matter what term you choose to use to refer to it.

 

I think the majority of people see how she behaves with her motions and grunts and think she's a complete r****d that can't think and is basically a shell. I know Aspergers doesn't mean you're stupid, but seeing her case from the outside you'd think she's on the lowest level of intelligence, if you don't know about the specifics.

You are wrong to the point that it's almost offensive. Yeah, I'll admit that language has evolved in the direction of "special needs" of "developmentally delayed" in place of "r****ded," but please. If you think downs syndrome and autism are the same thing, then you're r****ded.

 

I was talking about the public, I know quite a bit about these syndromes and know many of these people are more intelligent then the majority of our population. I wanted to point out that a case like that can hopefully educate people on the topic and make them think in a new way.

 

Great point, we should all just make up our own opinions on a subject without without looking at facts or listening to experts. Green is not really a color, the moon is just the other side of the sun, apples are bad for you

I'm in med school, there is a big difference between mental r****dation and autism and in med school we call it mental r****dation not special needs or developmentally delayed. We call mental r****dation, mental r****dation. Autism is completely different. Period. Science.

 

Edit: For example look at the thread nguyen made in the dish about Rose. Shows how too many persons think about it.

 

You are totally unaware of what you don't know. You should not be so sure of what you think is fact.

 

What are you basing this on? Is it just your opinion? You might wanna...I dunno....read some FACTS. Facts are like opinions but much cooler.
