I know Gay runs with them wide open. I believe gatlin creates a fist though. I know it could be biomechanics-related, but i'm wondering if that's just their own thing and not technical?
I think hands are pretty much your own thing and don't distribute to a faster time. Some make a fist, some have them loose or straight. Here's one little excerpt: "Relax your hands and curl your fingers loosely." But I don't think it is necessary anyhow. The most important thing in sprinting is basically to really catapult outside of the starting block instead of just going up. The mistake the most people do is running on the whole foot instead of only using your toes, this is crucial for running explosive. Also use your arms and shoulders in rythm to gain strength for your sprint.

yeah, but it also seemed like everyone behind Bolt pulled up too soon. They may have been too preoccupied with each other to time their finish better. EDIT- On that ^^^ screen shot, Gatlin is already over striding to pull up and bolt is lunging for the line...i'm disappointed. I expected a really hard finish by the all of the top 3 or 4 finishers.
