Bunch of loser mentalities if you don't want to see your team get immensely better while keeping draft picks and getting Howard.

I think the Rockets should just wait until next seasons free agency.

For what? You trade for Howard and could possibly flip him for bynum.

The biggest reason it's misleading is because it STARTED IN 2002 and Les Alexander has owned the team SINCE 1992. You're dealing with only 50% of the data! In other words, a subset. Moreover, of the five TMac/Yao years, at least three of them (2006, 2008, 2009) had one or the other down for virtual season-ending injuries by the trade deadline! You tell me - what incentive is there to pay millions in luxury tax money when you know you don't have the team to contend?

Given how close the figures you quoted are (and I posted a similar report), Adidas would have to be completely and utterly insane to do so.

I don't even know where the rest of your ramblings is going. Are you saying the Mavs are more likely than Houston to trade him in four or five years, should he want out? Gee, if only the Rockets had a recent maxed out "brand name" that they traded to New York at the end of his contract.

In reality, if you think Howard's camp will evaluate the situation based on who might be most likely to trade him in four or five years, you're being ridiculous. They don't even know the dynamics of what teams will look like, who will be contenders, who will have cap room, etc.! Miami certainly isn't a NY/LA in market, but circumstances emerged in the latter part of the last decade to make them incredibly viable in 2010.

Howard's camp will look at earnings for the foreseeable future. If LA/NY are options, he would likely be willing to take a $30 million paycut from staying in Houston based on the larger endorsement potential. Dallas is nowhere near that stratosphere.

Actually, I already did talk about it. LOOK AT YOUR OWN DATA. The difference between Dallas and Houston is virtual pennies - 2.5 million vs. 2.2 in Nielsen. Atlanta is right in there, too (2.3). Orlando? You have to go all the way down to 1.4, and they're declining (in contrast with increasing markets in Dallas/Houston).

The difference between Orlando and Dallas/Houston/Atlanta (FA contenders next summer) could be enough for endorsements to possibly outweigh the additional $30 million in guarantees. The difference between LA/NY and any of those teams could certainly be enough. The TINY gap between Houston and Dallas? Not so much. There's your answer.

Stern should be involved in this deal to force Howard to come to Huston to balance the superstars in each team.

I'm not even going to get into every thing you just wrote. There is no 50% of the data when it comes to the luxury tax, the tax is the tax. You can't make a comparison before the tax when salaries were a lot lower.

It's funny how when Cuban bought the Mavericks they started winning. I guess since you need stats on that too here:
    http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/DAL/

Cuban never stopped spending money to do what it took to make the team better. That meant making trades and signing free agents that took him over the luxury tax line. Les has never done that period. You refer to the injuries, yet even through the injuries, the Rockets still made the playoffs each season until the 2009-2010 season, except for 2005-2006. They never made the moves to get them deeper into the playoffs. Cuban on the other hand spent the money even though they only went to the finals twice. Cuban is known for throwing money around, Les is not.

As far as media markets are concerned, Dallas there isn't a huge difference, but there is a difference. If you looked at my previous references, Howard stated last December that he had three teams he would except a trade to. Lakers, Nets, or Mavericks. Better ask yourself why.

As far as Olrando goes the salary cap isn't any different for them as it is for us. They can pull the same leverage with Howard as we can. Your media market argument doesn't make sense unless you are refering to him leaving straight for Dallas, which by your argument still shouldn't make enough of a difference in his next Addidas contract.

Dude where have you been,Dwight has made it clear since last season that LA/Brooklyn/Dallas are the only teams he would sign with.

Yes, you can. Salaries were lower, but so were revenues. Moreover, by the turn of the century, salaries were well on their way to current levels... and Les still shelled out a five-year, $68 million deal to Scottie Pippen in 1999, even with Olajuwon and Barkley on the roster. Hell, Pippen and Olajuwon BY THEMSELVES made up $25 million of the $30 million salary cap (83%), and the Rockets still put a team around them!

It's not about the amounts. It's about the percentages. The salary cap is merely a revenue-driven metric on what a reasonable team salary figure would be in a given year. Les has proven over and over again that he will spend the money if the team legitimately has a chance to contend. That's the bottom line.

Making the playoffs isn't contention. You can ask the Hawks about that. Contention is being able to win an NBA championship. Cuban had Dirk fall into his lap, and he was the rarest of finds - a true superstar for 10+ years and almost no injury risk. Of course he's willing to go over the luxury tax line in that circumstance, because whenever you have Dirk, you have a chance to win a title. The Yao/TMac years aren't analogous at all, because in most of them, at least one was done by the deadline. There's also the fact that, um, Dirk was a clear tier above both. Unless you could bring in another superstar - and none were available, to my knowledge - there wasn't anything you could do to take those Rocket teams to the contending level. That's why you do have to look back to the 1990s, the last real time Les had a superstar and contending team in place.

Because AT THE TIME, Dallas was a sexy destination. They had just won an NBA title, had most of the championship core still there, and theoretically had the cap flexibility to add both Dwight AND Deron. Now? That core has been completely dismantled, Deron turned them down, and Dirk (35 next summer) just posted his worst season since 1999. It's night and day different.

NO. You don't seem to be good at reading comprehension. I'm saying the upgrade FROM HOUSTON (2.2 Nielsen, rising) to Dallas (2.5 Nielsen) doesn't make enough of a difference in his next Adidas contract. On the other hand, the upgrade FROM ORLANDO (1.4 Nielsen, falling) to any of the top available free agent options (Dallas, Houston, Atlanta) could very well make up the $30 million.

To simplify it even more: Houston-to-Dallas isn't a sizable market upgrade for Adidas. Orlando-to-Dallas clearly is. That's why it's not the same leverage.

Yes, because both of those guys are going to be thrilled to take a $30 million paycut to sign with the Rockets!

Heck, I would even accept a report that quotes Dwight Howard as saying that. It's always his camp, or source close to, etc. It's never him.

That's the thing...people read articles without actually reading what is being said or by whom it's being said or written. And so they start connecting dots that aren't there, and spreading false claims like an STD.

Rose having the possibility of making upwards of $250 million dollars from Adidas becomes Dwight Howard making more than $30 million more from Adidas playing in Dallas than playing in Houston or Atlanta.

Or going from "sources close to the situation say that Howard will only re-sign with one team" to "it's widely documented that Howard says that he'll walk away from any team in free agency that trades for him unless it's Brooklyn, LAL or Dallas...oh and that Dwight hates Houston".

But I digress. This issue is not mine to fight.

If no trade happens before that time, what other choice do they have?

What are you hearing? With the signing of the Rookies would a deal get done and announced based on a future date?

Bynum? Um, his choice would be to take the extra $30 million and re-sign with the Lakers, the only team he's ever known and arguably the most storied franchise in sports.

Howard? He's not staying in Orlando unless he puts his pen to paper before next deadline and SIGNS an extension. Assuming that doesn't happen, he'll be re-signing with wherever he's traded to (for the extra $30 million).

Correct, NY and LA mean more money to Howard and he wants to get there this year to get a bigger contract by LA owning his bird rights - he doesn't want to loose that money.

Howard doesn't get the LA money if he walks to Dallas after the season and he looses out on the bigger contract and extra year.

I see Howard as bluffing that he'll walk from Houston - I think that if Houston gets him he stays and takes the 5th year with a bigger contract and benefits with the Chineese market. Houston and Dallas are not that far apart population wise / total tv household viewers are similar so if the pay from the shoe company is based on population - Dallas and Houston aren't that far apart.

Dwight can't walk to LA next year - he has to be traded. Dwight is squaking right now and threatening over money, but once he is in Houston I think he'll settle in - his reputation has been so tarnished already he will stay in Houston unless Houston really blows it.

Houston has too much going for them and Howard has a strong relationship with Olajuwan. Plus there is a part of Howard that doesn't want to follow Shaq.

Leaving Houston won't result in Dwight getting more money, it will result in him getting less and getting stuck in Dallas - I like Cuban and I think he is a good owner, but his moves will be limited and Dirk is declining.

Mejia, PoopsWorld, and some of the ESPN guys have reported multiple times over the last month that early August is the most likely time for Howard to get dealt. We could definitely strike a deal then finalize after rookies eligible to be traded.
