I usually have one every weekday at lunch.. but I always feel so drowsy right after. I guess it's the food. Soda just effects all of us differently I suppose.
Depends on how frequently you drink. Soda is fine, in fact, a lot of things can be considered fine to consume, as long as its in moderation.

Soda is my one vice. I don't eat fast food, junk food snacks, desserts or anything (maybe once in a blue moon at a restaurant I suppose). Basically just 2 cooked meals a day. And one soda on top of that. I consider that my dessert. I almost forgot, I also have iced coffee maybe once a week. I stopped soda altogether for awhile before. You REALLY notice the syrupy taste when you start back up. I guess I got tired drinking water exclusively.
was listening to a radio show where the guest was inferring that the acidity of soda's has serious long term effects on your body. the write-up I linked is meh..but the quote puts it in perspective. http://www.healthenlightenment.com/soda.shtml
A glass a day is fine, especially if you need the vitamins. Using it as a replacement to water which is how most people treat soda, you will be overloading on sugar. Like the other poster said, a cup of orange juice might be like 4-5 oranges and 5 tablespoons of sugar added. You wouldn't consume that many times throughout the day. Here's a good generic comparison between juice and soda: http://www.hookedonjuice.com/
My cousin is big on fitness these days and she swears that diet soda is even worse than regular soda. She swears Diet Coke is the worst of all of them. She ran off a list of things but her main thing was diet soda makes you bloated, swears it makes it more difficult to lose weight if trying to do so (like it can prevent you from losing weight even when doing everything else right), causes diabetes, etc. . There are studies saying diet soda causes the same reaction in the body as regular soda, including metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance (meaning more likelihood of Type 2 Diabetes later in life). Some even say diet soda is worse for you than regular soda. Diet soda is said to be more acidic and said to cause you to have acidic pH in the body. And, there is another list of health negatives associated with the body being too acidic. I've been drinking diet soda (primarily, Diet Coke and Diet Dr Pepper) for as long as I can remember and I've pretty much been drinking soda since I was a kid whereby at some point years ago I switched from regular to diet because of the sugar or fructose corn syrup in regular. I've been through a lot of soda over the years. When I bleed, my blood burns right through stuff (like Alien) . But, I have yet to say soda has really done me in healthwise and I've been through a lot of the stuff. Laziness and poor food choices are much worse than soda imo. I am going to try to limit my consumption to around 20 ounces or less of the stuff going forward. Most days, I would go through a liter max usually. That said...I am working out again and dieting trying to cut way back on soda consumption and drink more water. I have a hard time just sticking to water and tea is not really my cup of...tea. If I didn't drink diet soda, then I would only ever drink water and it just bores me drinking water all the time. Soda also gives your dopamine levels a boost after consuming it....so it leaves you wanting more (but that is by design to keep you coming back for more).
Most American teas are boring. You have to get creative to find something you like. Try some green tea and add some lemon or mint or whatever flavor you get off to. I'm on a Rooibos tea kick these days, can't get enough of the stuff.
Thanks for the response. My interest in this is indeed on the two levels that you mention. Firstly the immediate effect of making you bloated and more difficult to lose weight. I'm trying to ensure that I'm drinking plenty of water throughout the day and that tends to keep my craving down to a maximum of 1 can daily. I try and avoid it altogether. My peak was the year after finishing university and starting my first job, surprisingly! At least I didn't join the energy drink bandwagon. Interesting point on the losing weight aspect - I've recently started training again as I've lost fitness the past few years (used to be big on soccer) and want to start playing again. That might give me an added motivation to cut it out. I am a little more concerned about the long-term effects you talk about. Diabetes and cancer are the ones I've heard mentioned but I haven't done enough reading to make up my mind completely. Anyone have any idea on this?
Anyone that says Diet Coke can cause cancer, diabetes, or weight gain has absolutely no medical data to prove it, there is a lot of misinformation out there and on this thread...The chemical aspertame is safe, I've been drinking protein shakes and diet drinks that contain aspartame for five years and I'm perfectly fine...You should definitely do more research.
This is true. When I mentioned earlier about studies on diet soda causing the same reaction in the body as regular soda, I did not write the correctly. What I should have said is they didn't prove that. In fact, they proved the opposite....that it didn't cause a rise in insulin levels (or a rise of "clinical signficance"). But, what these "researchers" try to do is draw a "correlation" between people who drink more than one regular or diet soda having a 50% higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome compared to people who drink one or less a week. The only real correlation in my opinion is that people who drink sodas (diet or otherwise) may be more likely to lead unhealthy lifestyles, not get enough exercise, etc. . These people are more likely to fit an unhealthy lifestyle because soda is considered one bad choice among other bad choices. There are a lot of people that want you to believe diet soda is extremely bad for you even if the science to back it up isn't really there....so I agree with you there. Hell, it even clouds my judgement on diet soda at times to where I start believing all the negative unprovens. People will believe/use even unproven points to use it as justification/motivation for why they no longer consume...even if it may not necessarily be true...imo. http://www.livestrong.com/article/445739-diet-drinks-insulin/
