Can all the daddy's in the house say yeah?

    Yeah.

"When you assume, you make an ass, out of u, and me." -Oscar Wilde

Your post is completely irrelevant and comes off as premeditated. It's a polarizing view on this issue that's akin to saying if you don't believe in God, you don't have a moral compass. There's no relation between my first post and outright altruism. There's also no relation between the liberal thought process on the BBS and altruism. Saying that is a sham that's sugarcoating the real issue.

The BBS liberals aren't sacrificing their best interests for humanity... they're sacrificing an individual opinion to be accepted by others with similar thought processes. It comes off as unselfish to the untrained eye, but it's really just a selifish and insecure way of seeking validation instead of making concrete points. If everyone in the world was like that, we'd still think it was flat. We'd still think the universe revolved around the Earth. We'd be sheeps in a world with no shepherds. I'd love to live in a world with rose colored petals serenading my each and every step, humans sacrificing for the greater good, and women not telling me they want my semen out of wedlock. But that's not the case baby cakes. That's just not how this world works.

I don't align with any party. But I find the conservatives here are alot more self assured and straight forward in their opinions, without saying things just to "not step on toes" and keep everybody smiling when the ground under them is caving in. Ambiguity is a disadvantage in a political environment. Some of these so called liberals like redredemption rack up millions of posts looking for validation and spattering a plethora of vague points everywhere, hoping one sticks. I'm sure you'll play it off in the name of "humanity", but the truth is it's needy and inefficient. That's an unfocused person more interested in trying to be accepted than standing for something he believes in. It's like giving a 12 year old an AK 47 and telling him to hit a target a mile away. He'll hit it eventually, but it will take him 5-6 rounds and tons of crossfire casualties to fulfill his mission.

I prefer trained minds acting as snipers.

I'm not against emotions, empathy or taking pleasure from life. I'm against wasting it and falling short of your true potential because you just want some more friends to like your latest profile pic on facebook.

Friends tell me my genetic makeup is that of a winner. That of a thinker. And that of someone who's not afraid to take the path less taken to carve out a better future for the world when the masses are stumbling around looking for direction.

So fear not, my little friend. I am that man. I am that light at the end of the tunnel of neverending darkness that is the D&D.

And you can quote me on that.

The problem with a labels is that while their precise meaning is ever-changing, the word stays the same.

Anyhow, while I understand your POV and the historical context, I think my argument is that liberalism, like any other political ideology, has adapted to whatever methodology is the most practical for the cause. More to the point, governments in Jefferson and Locke's era functioned under a vastly different notions of what constituted an equal society.

I should note that I am not defending "big government liberals".

I admire how seriously some of you take posting on a Rockets message board. Just keep in mind, many don't take it as seriously as others do and oneshould probably temper ones expectations of the experience here and the judgements one bases on that.

Isn't it quite sad that, hypothetically, someone with 42,000 + posts, a member of a group for over 12 years, an initial founding member of that group, and tens of thousands of hours logged browsing that group can't take it seriously enough to offer a valid opinion once in a while? That he treats it like a washroom where one goes to defecate?

It's likely that that person's self esteem is so low, his confidence in himself so non existant, that he dedicates a significant portion of his life to something he doesn't care about. Something, he doesn't take seriously and essentially spams. Or even worse, he feigns indifference because he does not have the ability to make an impact.

    It's telling.

It is very telling that there aren't many conservatives on here worth debating with.

Yeah it's telling. It's telling you guys that on this particular BBS most of us conservatives find arguing (vs. debating) with liberals a complete waste of time.

We've heard this same shrilling trite BS for decades and its the same BS now...nothing changes. So why argue.

Given that a European party that advocates greater government spending and involvement calls itself "The Liberal Party" tells me that your definition of 'liberalism" isn't universally shared by Europeans.
Yes I read the link but again I asked you where does John Maynard Keynes and the UK Liberal Party fit into that which you have not answered.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberal_Party_(UK)#Origins

They later merged with Social Democrats, etc., so the focus changed. But their origins are clearly fitting my definition of classical liberalism.

You are welcome. If you need further classes from me, let me know.

CTRL-F (or CMD-F if you use a Mac) on that Wikipedia page. Enter the word "Keynes".

    You are welcome.

FWIW, I wasn't including you in that. I think the two of us would have a pretty awesome debate over ping-pong and munchies. :)

PROTIP: When you're ESL, and somebody calls into question your ability to understand the subtleties of American English discourse, don't try to snappify your way into a kewl comeback by talking about "chasing ambulance cars"

At last someone re-engages. I didn't exactly expect you to displayed a level of narcissism I thought only existed in cartoons, and Charlie Sheen after taking an 8 ball to the dome, but it's better than nothing.

I'm going to leave the assumptions comment behind as you play pot and I play kettle.

You've only reaffirmed the ideas behind my original post. Altruism was a necessary topic to describe the polar opposite of that which your ego, which seems large enough to rip apart time-space, has convinced you is a universal truth. That your underived views of common social structure are somehow less outdated than the "Allahu Akbar's" who you so callously look down on. What's truly ironic, is you talk about them needing to stop their religion from being misinterpreted, as you defend a party who uses Christianity to manipulate our populace in the same way. They used the most heavily indoctrinated ideas of a region, and exploit them to further personal interest. "Not stepping on toes" is often confused with heavy handed ignorance to the untrained eye.

I'm not saying the world is going to turn into Who-ville. We aren't all going to come outside one day, hold hands and sing in harmony because of a sudden epiphany. If only the universe was so kind.

Nature IS kind to people like you, however. Fight or flight, and laws like survival of the fittest were in place before any species was self aware, and are still dominant. You still accept those less evolved laws as the best option. It also seems like you are intelligent enough to consciously manipulate them, and the herd behavior they bring about when people don't stop and think, to benefit yourself and those you deem fit. It's an assumption, I know, but its absolutely a reasonable assumption to make when based on the posts I've seen from you.

The Shepard/Sheep structure is for dealing with the ruminant animals. We are sheep trying to herd sheep. The stratification only works for short periods of time in a society of self aware individuals. The "shepards" try to create a social structure that they cannot maintain control of. Most commonly due to self serving behavior. It's similar to why communism is nothing more than a good idea that does not work in practice. Your "shepards" are no more capable or willing to overcome their primitive instincts than the sheep. Therefore, they will continue to create the low entropy societies, only to lose focus on the bigger picture. Once there is no common goal at the top, then the society created is doomed to race towards and higher entropy state, and collapse. Only to allow another group of shepards to come along and perpetuate the cycle by starting over with the most recent transportation and communication technologies that are most commonly developed by INDIVIDUALS who shepards previously classified as sheep. Similar to the Strauss-Howe generational theory.

So, when I say "evolve a little," this is what I meant. We are reaching our limit of expansion on this planet. The shepard/sheep structure will only leading into the buzzsaws that we are racing towards. Humans need an idea that suits a society of self aware individuals, not stratification for TRULY mindless mammals.

Of course, those lucky enough to be given a high level of intelligence must first get past their own ego. I hope one day you realize that the unwavering sense of self assuredness you have is the same thing that shackles people indoctrinated into religion.

"I'm right, because the illogical leap in faith I've chosen to accept, serves my interests and assures me that I am."

This only works against a global acceptance of ideals like altruism, and reason. Stop assuming you know whats best for the "sheep."

You need a new "Adam M. Smith" category.
