    "Its" ;)

    Biased Chinaman here. Neither system is perfect, but going by total medal count implies
    • Gold is worth just as much as bronze but
    • Bronze is infinitely better than 4th place finish

    The "perfect" system would be a point system, where gold=3, silver=2, and bronze=1, or something similar. While IOC refused to "officially" rank countries' performance, it does put a # next to the countries and w.r.t. how many gold/silver/bronze they earned.

    Not saying the Total Medal Count is a right, but I honestly don't care for either system. Point system would definitely be a better way to determine something though, I would agree.

    Every country put out a list. so even though there is no "official" list, everyone have an "unofficial" list, and guess what, people care about that list every where.

    I support the total medal count system.

    Two NBA final appearance (even if lost both) >>> One championship.

    In my humble opinion.

    Actually medals should be counted per head, not per event. I mean, a basketball gold counts just as 1, but 12 is more fair because everyone on the team has contributed. It's not fair that a 12 member team can win only 1 medal, and on the other hand a single swimmer can bag a dozen.

    Since when did US start to count the total medals instead of golds?

    Except the Jazz lost twice to the Bulls, and the Mavericks only won one championship;)

    Since 2008 when China started winning the gold count.

    Prior, it didn't really matter because whoever won the most gold (US) usually won the total medal count anyway.

    It should be 4 pts for gold, 2 for silver, 1 for bronze. It rewards extra for golds, gives points for all medals, and ranks them appriopately.

    It should be a weighted scale

    Gold= 3 pts
    Silver = 2 pts
    Bronze = 1 pts

    Agreed on the points system.

    The thing is, it really isn't about how many you win, but rather how much happiness the games bring you.

    2008's NBC said it best. "It's not the triumph, but the struggle"

    Not really. China has nothing on the U.S. Sorry. It won't be long before they fade back to being 3rd or 4th again in the Olympics meanwhile the U.S. will continue to be what it's been, just give it a couple more Olympics.

    Not being a dick, I'm just curious where this staunch optimism comes from

    The U.S. recycles athletes better than any country for most of the sports we have or are good at. Therefore, I think it's just a matter of time before we start winning the gold margin again, whether it'll be the next olympics or the olympics after. We've had a track record of doing so. I don't think of China as the new USSR.

    Yeah, why wouldn't I be? I don't see how it would come across as a joke.

    Since '88, China went (going by gold medals) from 11th, to 4th, to 4th, to 3rd, to 2nd, to 1st.

    Keep in mind China has only been in 8 (!) Summer Olympics total.

    If you are talking about track, basetball that is probably the case. I am guessing that's all the "sports" to you. I am guessing in 10-20 years China will probably be winning the Olympics like the old USSR used to do.

    No, I'm taking all sports into account. That's your guess. I already stated mine. That's that.
