It seems as though American media prefers to rank based on total medal count, while the majority of international media ranks their standings based on Gold medal counts first, then silver, then bronze.

Is this a cultural difference? USA acknowledges the accomplishments of all athletes who reach the podium, while other countries put the primary emphasis on being 1st place?

Whatever makes the US look good, right?
NBC put the woman gymnastic in the spot light on prime time knowing that the US women carried the gold in the afternoon. The man gymnastic, although very hyepd, was not shown till the very end of the broadcast.
It is what is. Medal ranking, gold medal ranking, point system. Whatever.

But other countries don't do that, Japan for example.

The U.S. owns the Olympics. **** everyone else. I'll go by either, don't really care. We've dominated these games since it's birth.

Men's Gymnastics was shown through most of the night. And they actually cut away from the American team after their early stumble and covered China, Japan and Great Britain. In terms of the broadcast, it's what draws the biggest audience. So yeah the sports that Americans do well in will get the primetime slots.

I actually like what NBC does....give total medal count but acknowledge who has the most golds. For some athletes and nations, just getting on the podium is a tremendous accomplishment.

In a perfect world though there would be no nation medal count.

For as long as I can remember, the US always ranked by total medal count. This is true for the winter olympics as well. So this doesn't apply for only these olympics. For example, China has more golds than US right now. US has more total medals. What you say is true in that it makes the US look better ranking by total medals. But the US have always done this. Is this a cultural thing?

I can't think of another country that does this.

i could be wrong, but i can't ever remember not seeing it reported as total medal count. it's not like we switch it around every olympiad. how about the rest of the world stop having the opposite standard of the US in whatever is being talked about and then whine that we don't just automatically fall in line with that standard.

I think it is like the measuring system, the rest of the world uses metric and we use the British system.

There is a reason why Gold/Silver/Bronze exist... Silver and Bronze is for self esteem, Gold means you are king...

And? We still dominate these games. Maybe not as significant as we used to, but these are still our games. USA > China.

Again, it's really not that big of ideal IMO. US likes it meda count, so what. There is no award for that. Same goes for the gold medal count. Two objective standards. It becomes subjective if you want it be that way. To Brazil and Argentina, they probably only count soccer, volleyball and basketball. Those are the "heavest" medals in the Olympics by their measure. At the end of the day, whatever makes the people proud works, right.

What is your point? I said the rest of the world use a different system than the US. Japan do not use the overall medal count to move up in standing.

    Gold 5, Silver 3, Bronze 1. That's how I see it.

Actually 2008 was the first time, that gold medal leader was different than the total medal leader. It was only then the difference was noticed.

Do you want to be the best at almost winning? If so, medal count.
