I have a simple question on my rent. I'm currently a tenant and on contract which is currently month-to-month. My rent is due for August which is tomorrow, but I'm not going to be here for the whole month. I know I have to pay the rent but would it be wrong in my part to ask for some sort of discount or something? At least offer to pay half? Or is that being foolish and just pay in full? I just find it kinda silly to pay full rent and not be here at all -- but I also know it's rent and I'm pretty much obligated to pay. I'm just curious to what you guys think. Landlords and I have never bumped heads or anything. We're both in really good terms so maybe I figured they wouldn't mind helping me out. Oh and one more thing. AC use is added to the rent for these next couple of months which is only 20 bucks, and I really don't think I should pay it.
can your landlord let someone else stay there while you are gone? if you order dinner and only eat a little do you still have to pay for it?
You could ask for a 20 buck discount if you agree to turn off the ac... however your stuff is there and he's not making additional money off his property for that month you're still occupying the space. Sorry man but you're screwing your landlord over on that one.
I say it's bad form to give essentially one day notice and ask for a discount. Landlords have bills they have to pay and part of their income is from the unit you are renting. It may put them in a bind (that is not their fault), if they give you a discount. That being said, there is nothing wrong with asking. The worst that would happen is that they will say no.
if you're "on contract" month to month, I assume that means there is a contract. Your answer is there.
In Texas, it is legal even on a MTM for landlord to ask for at least 1 months rent from time asked to vacate. I'll assume you're 18 and didn't know this basic f***ing thing.
No clue where you live and how the laws/culture is. If you were my tenant I would expect a notice. That's there to protect the owner's investment. If you bail, he will have an empty unit for however many weeks it takes to prep it then get it on the market. Empty unit= money lost. Do the right thing. Pay the rent if you can afford it. Again, if I were the owner and you came to me and said you were moving halfway through the month, I would ask for the full rent, then offer a refund if I could get someone in there right away to replace you. Seems like the best you can get without screwing someone over.
I live in Los Angeles. I'm going to pay the rent in full. Don't want any bad blood with the landlord. Maybe if I would've given them some kind of notice in advance, but that's not the case. Thanks, my fellow Clutchfan'ers.
So are you moving out for a month, or just going to be away? If all of your stuff is still in the apartment, you're still living there, whether you are physically present or not. If you are moving out, do you plan to return to the exact same apartment? If so, how do you expect the landlord to rent the place for exactly one month on 1 day's notice. No matter how you slice it, it would appear that you're liable for August. As someone else mentioned, the only way not to pay for AC would be to have it turned off while you're gone. If it were me, I'd pay the 20 bucks to keep my place from turning into a sauna for a whole month.
I got what I wanted. I spoke to my landlord and mentioned a discount since I was going to be gone and she worked with me and gave me more of a discount than I anticipated. I rent a room, not an apt or house. And have always been on-time with my payments. It doesn't hurt to ask. Now I'm going to save some good mula!
Are you trying to tell me no one read the title as "Tennant" and thought this was a Doctor Who question!? Linpossible...
