This is definitely something we were missing last year (sans Chuck Wagon/Brad Miller) and this is absolutely a role that Royce could fill. Throwing Lin into a pick and roll scenario with Royce just opens up all kinds of possibilities from an offensive standpoint. Of course, Royce doesn't have Chuck's defensive presence, but he is a very good rebounder, and his passing is probably better. It'll be interesting to see if McHale is willing/able to work this wrinkle into the offense more, although it's really something that Adleman is well known for, especially with McHale being more of a low post guy. But to me, this is the role that Royce was born to play.
Too bad Adelman isn't here anymore. I doubt that McHale will do any high post offense. With Lin he's going to run the PnR to death. Not a knock on McHale, but I have a feeling that White's passing talent is going to be wasted here. And he is not exceptionally good at other things for now. My prediction is that he's the last PF on the depth chart. Maybe he can get some minutes at the 3.
We definitely need to find a way to get him the ball in the high post around the freethrow line and get some movement around him. I agree that looks like the perfect spot for him.
I agree with you. I am concerned about the unimaginative offense being centered around the point guard. Lin is good. He's a good PnR PG and Dwight is a good PnR center. But we would be ultra spicey and dicey if we could run the high post set with Royce up there. He would be absolutely deadly in that set.
Spicey and dicey is exactly what I had in mind. It may be a little bit of a pipe dream that McHale would actually run the high post, but hey, Chris Finch would do it, right?
That's true. When Finch was in the valley he was running RA's system but last year when the D league players came up they said they were running a different system than the Rockets. Maybe Finch should run the offense.
Maybe the coach feels the same way as me. I would like White to come in with the second unit to start off. Grab some rebounds then take them down the court as a point forward similar to Lebron. It put's major pressure on the defense. It changes up from the point guards bringing it up. What it also potentially does is give him the chance to make plays if Lin or whoever else at point guard are struggling to get the Rockets into the offensive sets.
Agreed. Royce would be a great RA guy. I wonder if he would get off Rick's bench rookie year. I bet yes. Royce will rebound and run the break. He'll also back his guy in and draw doubles, hopefully. Definitely eventually. I wonder how he will look in a pick and roll.
Did you love watching the Houston defense last year? Because it was about the same as the year before, only the offense was worse. SAC was a top 10 defense 4 years in a row under Rick. Houston was a top 5 defense 2 years in a row - did you not enjoy watching it? I guess you didn't. So your problem must be with Rick specifically.
golly darn, for the last time, when we had that tall awesome asian dude, the defense was ranked 3rd with the fuhrer commanding! (he mad^) with a full off season, no excuse for mctalky to expand his playbook from sticky pad to full play board.
As for White, let's see if he plays more games for the Vipers or the Rockets next year before imagining him in an Adelman offense that McHale will never run.
I have to admit, I miss the corner offense. I thought its the reason why Finch was brought in to continue that part of the system, and possibly adding McHale's post up and PnR. The ball movement is beautiful, no one is hogging the ball, and no over-dribbling like the Stevie days. Everyone gets to touch the ball and the ball seems to find the open man. Royce would shine in that offense, as Motiejunas and possibly Terrence Jones. Its sad when Lowry was begging McHale to include the corner offense into the system and was denied. I really hope that at least a portion of that offense is still used :-(
problem is no one will rotate to white like they do scola because everyone knows he has no confidence in his jumpshot
this video shows me how much we are gonna struggle to score this season without any real consistant jumpshooters or 3pt threat
I just lost 4 long paragraphs of analysis of the D-Mo - White offense under McHale. Sorry, I am functioning on a lap top with a tenuous Wi-Fi connection in the high mountains on vacation. To sum it up - D-Mo starting the offense at the 3 point line covered by a power forward who is probably not quick enough guard D-Mo to closely. D-Mo works his way in until doubled. The double cannot come from the 5 because D-Mo can see over the defenders and make the pass to Asik. The double comes from the wing. D-Mo is a very competent passer for a 4. If White is in the game he is running off of picks. But unfortunately White is in the D-League until he develops a jump shot. However an open Lin, Martin, or Parsons will suffice. Provided of course that the put in the needed time needed on their jump shots. A much shorter less in depth analysis than my previous attempt. I might continue in seceding posts.
