you have a rather naive perspective on how this works...

at the end of the day a sports franchise is going to do what is in it's own best interest.

you are right that these are not average joes. they are entertainers who are paid millions to perform for average joes.

BUT if they are willing to forego millions of dollars in the process they are free to play and live whever they please. however, at the end of the day just like most average joes they are going to go where the money is.

THIS is the reason why Howard is so desperate to force his landing spot. because whichever roster he is on at the end of the season can offer him far and away the most money.

You say "pretty simple" then you throw out the worlds worst analogy ever written... ok....

Dwight Howard wanted to go to Brooklyn to build a superteam, AND get paid the additional salary he would be able to obtain with his bird rights if he was traded their prior to becoming a free agent and signing for less.

Learn easier, more universal analogies like -

"He wants to have his cake and eat it too."

WTF!? Are you r****ded? When did anyone say Dwight Howard shouldn't be allowed to work and live where he wants?

Of course he should be able to work and live where he wants. I would be 100% supportive of Dwight Howard being traded to the Rockets, and then leave the Rockets to sign a FA contract in the city of his choice. If he does so, I warmly see him goodbye and wish him the best of luck in his new ciy.

Um, this is an occupational hazard of playing in the NBA, and every player knows it going in. Once you're under contract, you can be traded anywhere. This isn't an everyday Joe job, where Joe can apply to work at another company whenever he desires. This is a league of ironclad contracts, during which the teams have the power. The players are compensated quite well for giving up that "control", too.

If Dwight doesn't like it and wants more control, he can go take an everyday Joe job and stop playing professional basketball. Otherwise, it's a terrible analogy.

Just in case you are not joking, that phrase is better said as "wanting to eat your cake and have it too", meaning, you want to be able to consume it and still have it to consume later...

sort of like how people on this thread talk about how well Kevin Martin would play alongside Dwight Howard.

He's not leaving money on the table, and that means no sign and trade and no clean break. He has to force a deadline trade to the team he wants to stay with or he loses Millions. Since no other team has stepped up, that leaves Nets, Lakers, and us, which really means it's just us against LA.

    Not even...

Cats hanging hope on the same old "there's no way he would pass up..."

    question.....WHAT IF HE DID?

    Then what?

Also....just like the sports franchise does whats in it's best interest...

What do you think a FA player would do once they have the power?

No more contract....they're FA.....they can do what they want to do!

Under contract they have to do what they are told basically....but once FA....they DO NOT!

    Simple.

    Again....if he NOT bluffing....then what?

In mid-March, Dwight was six weeks from having exactly that power. He opted in and gave it up, because that's how important that Bird rights max deal is to him. That decision shows where Dwight's priorities are, and "having the power" wasn't at the top of the list.

As for "what happens if he's not bluffing"? Then we probably get a top 5 draft pick in the following season and start from scratch. I'm fine with that risk, because as of now, the Rockets have very little. You have to have stars to contend in the NBA. It's very unlikely for anyone on the Rockets' roster to develop into one, it's doubtful the team is bad enough to get a top 5 pick, and after the Howard situation resolves itself, there isn't another potentially available elite player in a trade for quite some time.

I'd rather swing for the fence and fail than continue on a path that leads to Memphis/Indiana territory.

I would hope that Morey is operating as if Dwight isn't bluffing, and has a plan to legitimately make the Rockets a more attractive location than Dallas a year from now, bird rights be damned. If anyone actually thinks we are done with deals after we acquire Dwight, you'd be sorely mistaken.

Nope. And if he leaves, that's his right. You were the one that started the "forcing" nonsense. No one's forcing him to do anything that he has control over. What you're alluding to as forcing is a trade to Houston, which he gave up control over when he signed his contract and subsequently opted in.

The problem is that he can't just do whatever he wants. He wants to sign with teams with no cap room. Don't you think Grant Hill and Tmac wanted to sign in LA or NY when they were free agents? A trade is the only way to get what he wants. Otherwise he would have played out his contract last year and signed where he wanted to be.

We could potentially get a top 5 pick next draft all while keeping pieces and not trading for a person that doesnt wanna play here.

Getting Dwight would be dope if he wanted to play in the H but indications seem to be that ORL is trying to accomodate Dwight's request.

Y'all say it's a ploy to up the price....might be...but ORL don't seem to be fighting very hard to get him here especially if we have the best offer on the table.

    Why not? :(

    But Dwight has no power.....lol

    Okay, homie.

Historically, of top five draft picks, how many develop into elite-level players? I'd guess 20%, at best. If I see a known quantity in front of me and I'm in the position the Rockets are, I'm rolling the dice every single time.

What indications are these? We have very little knowledge of what Orlando is doing. Anonymous sources are crap, since most of those are from Fegan and led most folks to believe a Brooklyn deal was inevitable. Spare the "here's what Orlando is doing and why" lecture until we actually have facts as to what's going on.

Your point is that he has the theoretical ability to leave next summer? Thanks, Captain Obvious.

Why engage when you OBVIOUSLY know that's the underlying point?

    lol.....so mad. :(
