Are they going to show what Gandalf is up to when he departs from the story for a bit?

Yep. Gonna put it in spoilers just in case :)

Basically him, Saruman, Galadriel, Elrond, and possibly Radagast (the other wizard) go and smash the Necromancer/Sauron and stuff him into Mordor.

Hell yeah, good to know. I'm gonna have to read it again before I see the film. I haven't read The Hobbit in almost a decade.

they attack Dol Guldur but they do not battle Sauron as he has already withdrawn when they get there.

later Gandalf realizes that Saruman as leader of the council had purposefully delayed them, so he could try to find the ring before Sauron

I'm all for this, IF the series doesn't become like Bilbo in FOTR: “I feel thin, sort of stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread.”

If it all needs three, say, 2.5 hour movies, fine.

But if it's just to add scenes of Bofur clipping his toenails and of Dori shaving Fili's eyebrows while he's asleep drunk and of trying to answer the question "does a Beorn really **** in the woods?", forget it.

And isn't it late in the game for this? The first movie is due in December.

I think it's for additional scenes that weren't in The Hobbit but that were explained in The Silmarillion. So it's more of a 'Meanwhile, back at the Hall of Justice...'

I know they're delving into the Appendices again for the Hobbit movies. I do wonder what PJackson has up his sleeve if he's thinking 3 movies.

    The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
The Hobbit: There and Back Again
The Hobbit: Mo Money, Mo Money, Mo Money!

Well, he's in post production right now. Maybe he's just loving too many scenes and can't cut enough to fit into two movies. But the extra isn't enough for one movie either.

Why must every series have an installment that is split into two (and now three) movies? Oh yeah... $$

I guess I won't have a problem with it if there's plenty of story to tell.

    Confirmed.

The Hobbit Becomes a Trilogy: Peter Jackson Announces Third Movie in the Series!

The Hobbit will be a trilogy, just like The Lord of the Rings.

After much deliberation since wrapping principal photography, Peter Jackson has finally confirmed the rumor that's been the talk of the shire: a third installment of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit is now in the works.

"It is only at the end of a shoot that you finally get the chance to sit down and have a look at the film you have made," the Oscar-winning filmmaker wrote on his Facebook page this morning. "Recently [collaborators] Fran [Walsh], Phil [co-screenwriter Philippa Boyens] and I did just this when we watched for the first time an early cut of the first movie—and a large chunk of the second."

Jackson continued: "We were really pleased with the way the story was coming together, in particular, the strength of the characters and the cast who have brought them to life. All of which gave rise to a simple question: Do we take this chance to tell more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as the filmmakers, and as fans, was an unreserved ‘yes.'"

The helmer added that his chief reason for adding one more entry to the two previously announced—The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again,—is that another chapter in the saga along with some additional filming next year is what ultimately is needed to fulfill his vision for Tolkien's epic.

"We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance. The richness of the story of The Hobbit, as well as some of the related material in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, allows us to tell the full story of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the part he played in the sometimes dangerous, but at all times exciting, history of Middle-earth."

No word yet on the title of the trilogy-capper.

The development of the now-three films wasn't without difficulty as the New Zealand director had to iron out, of course, the complicated rights situation with distributors MGM, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema, which accounted for the The Hobbit's years-long delay since Jackson swept the Academy Awards with 2003's The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.

"So, without further ado…I'd like to announce that two films will become three," Jackson concluded. "It has been an unexpected journey indeed, and in the words of Professor Tolkien himself, "'a tale that grew in the telling.'"

I believe money probably played a larger role.

It's a total money grab. I've always felt Jackson was overrated.

So you think the first trilogy was overrated?

I actually do a little bit. I loved the books, but the third movie was mainly such a slog. (For me) Jackson has some trouble with pacing.

I did especially enjoy the first two movies, but given excellent source material and a huge budget, I'm not sure I rank that as a masterpiece achievement.
