I am not one of those people
So rather than do what is right . .. get the government out of marriage
then we do what is easy . . . .
We will allow same sex marriage because it would make it easy for them to get these benefits
    but
we won't allow polygamy because . . . not that we oppose to it but because it would cause all those things to get too complicated?

Expedience becomes the driver for legislation and governmental involvement?

in many ways the USA is buckling under the weight of past infrastructure. Sometimes you have to tear it down and rebuild. You can only patch it so long.

What you say is true about having to rip it down to fix the problems you speak of, for people that believe they are problems.

But I will say that there isn't even any effort to do that at the moment. There is no legislation even proposed to deal with all the problems I mentioned, so in the meanwhile I'll support the legislation and movements to give equal rights.

This is where you are missing the big picture. Most of that can be had w/out a marriage, whether youre gay or straight. Yes, it takes time and work.
But this is the part you keep ignoring: Your "one stroke" solution comes with a big bag of nasty tricks when it comes to divorce. The government marriage was never designed to be dissolved. And face the truth, a large percentage of marriages will end up in divorce, whether you're gay or straight. Many nasty divorces come from two people hopelessly romantically in love and never think once about a divorce. Then they go through hell trying to part.

Dissolve the whole notion of government recognized marriages and start having everyone go through civil unions. Create a better system that allows two people to part much more easily.

That is not entirely true. The gay marriage debate certainly contrasts how much the government is involved in marriage than we realize.

But how many times have you heard a divorcee saying they will never get married again? Most of those people have gone through an ugly divorce and never want to go risk going through the legal hell of getting divorced again.

Again I'm not opposed to getting the govt. out of marriage, but it isn't currently a movement at all. There are those that pay lip service to the idea, but most haven't even done that until it looked like some same sex couples were going to be married.

Someone saying they don't want to get married again is a very different thing than saying govt. should get out of all marriage. Maybe they even oppose the idea of marriage, but that's still different than saying govt. should be out of it.

This is totally ridiculous. Why are people so bent out of shape over the CEO's opinion. Why do people care if he is against gay marriage? By stating an OPINION he is not discriminating against anyone. He has the right to free speech and anyone stupid enough to let what he says bother them has the right to avoid Chick-Fil-A. Political correctness gone crazy!!!!

Correct. He isn't discriminating, but he is stating a bigoted opinion. I don't know why it bothers you that bigotry offends people.

People are annoyed because he's used his religious beliefs such as not being opened on Sunday to garner a following of like-minded customers. For him to say that his stance on gay marriage is just an opinion is wanting his cake and to eat it too.

Prostitution is legal in Nevada. Why are people not running out there to get it put on a ballot and banned?

Drugs are legal on different levels but unfortunately, federal laws override local and state laws.

Polygamy is illegal in the sense of being lawfully married but it is still carried out.

Several graduations I recently attended at public universities and high schools had prayer readings. Nobody is up in arms over those.

He's using the company to do it, though, so I understand why LGBT groups and sympathizers want to boycott.

He should just use his own money. It's bad for business.

Got back from playing my first duplicate bridge tournament in Chattanooga (we did well). Was hungry and went to a restaurant that serves chicken, is open on Sundays, and does not discriminate against gays....ZAXBY'S!!!! And it was damn delicious, too!

    1) Zaxby's is subpar.
    2) Manny, tell me one time Chic-fil-a has discriminated against gays.

What happened to the Manny who used to have his own opinion...instead of falling trap for popular buzz words?

It bothers me when government officials go after private citizens for expressing an opinion.

Pure intimidation by the Boston mayor.

Highly disagree on 1. Should have said "bigoted" instead of "discriminated". What happened to me SG? I have had my eyes opened and am trying to unbrainwash myself.

I'm in favor of intimidating bigots in this non-violent way. It doesn't deny the chick-fil-a owner the right to state his bigoted opinions. But any pressure it puts on him, is deserved. That's the way to do it.

If the Mayor brought down govt. agencies against the owner, that would bother me.

Yes, the corporate office position sucks, but what about the local franchises?

When you go to Carl's Jr and get a burger do you care what the corporate offices' stance is on global warming?

Has he done anything legally to try to prevent Chic-Fil-A from operating in Boston?

Is the Mayor entitled to an opinion?

not clear what policies he is referring to other than a private citizen's personal opinion

"nice business license you have there, shame if something were to happen to it"

I didn't hear you labeling Obama a bigot for having the same position until recently.

not to be a jerk, but personally I feel as though you're looking for support in a time of weakness by compromising your beliefs. That's no way to live life, son.
