People forget this. Best case scenario we get him cheap, he re-signs and one of our rookies become really good.

OT: I actually prefer having everything in one thread, but several were complaining about the latest articles and tweets being thread worthy.

This makes sense...but do you think that Dwight is thinking rationally? He is thinking big market, glitz and glamor. That can only be satisfied by NY/LA. With that said, I would be really surprised if ORL/HOU trade is not the final result.

    Continuation:

Just like Toronto and Cleveland ended up S&T both Bosh and LeBron.

    http://www.aolnews.com/2010/07/10/cavs-agree-to-lebron-james-sign-and-trade-for-draft-picks/

    http://www.aolnews.com/2010/07/09/report-raptors-agree-to-bosh-sign-and-trade-with-heat/

Even after repeated statements in the media that both Cleveland and Toronto wouldn't accommodate their star players if they left, in the end both teams still did.

They needed to get something back in return even if they were just 2nd round draft picks or so, rather than letting them walk via FA and get nothing.

Anyway whatever happens, I trust Morey will do what is best.

/end devil's advocate debating (for now)

You know some people are painting the picture as if Houston is bending over backwards and holding their ankles for Dwight Howard which I know isn't true. If that was the case a trade would have went down by now. Stop hyping that crap up Daryl Morey is strategizing for him if he comes and if he doesn't. If it doesn't happen F 'em just F 'em!

The "Dwightmare" might be easier to handle than you might think with proper management from day 1.

Dwight has a legal obligation to play for the team that obtains his contract. He must play, or be seriously injured for him not to be in breach of his contract and lose the money he is set to make next season.

If Dwight fakes an injury then the Rockets surely will seek the ability to block his salary in every which way from every hitting his checking account. Short story...

    -He's going to play
-The Rockets will not do the trade without of full physical and medical records
-If he pouts in the media or conducts himself unprofessionally, they have every right to fine him to a high degree.

As far as the media-forcing trade scenario goes. The Houston Rockets can legally control the conversation that comes from Dwights mouth, coaches, and front office execs. Meaning, nobody is to speak of Dwights impending free agency, trade rumours, etc. or else the Rockets will fine them, and they have every right to do so.

ESPN can talk about everything that is coming from Dwight's agent all they want, but the Rockets have every right to NOT play along with the games that might be played out in the media.

If Im Morey, you call his bluff, and privately tell him... we are willing to let you walk for nothing. We will not trade you unless we feel its the right move to make for the team, and see if Dwight really is willing to walk away from a guaranteed contract just to force his way to play with his friends.

In the meantime during the season you agree with terms to not discuss it during the season, act professionally, and make moves to bring in that secondary all-star type of player to Houston. Houston should have the pieces to make that happen.

If you have a true contending team and the ability to give Dwight more money over the life of his contract.... just like with D-Will in Brooklyn showed....he's not leaving.

This is how it "should" in theory go if the Rockets aquire Dwight.

Worst case scenario, we end up with Bynum and form a super team NEXT YEAR with an OLDER Kobe. The Lakers want Howard, right? Why not trade for Dwight straight up and if he starts pouting again get Bynum?

I don't see why anyone would facilitate a three way trade when Nash still has some left in the tank. You have to go for the best player and play it out.

Dwight signed for 5 years is worth more than Dwight signed for 1 year. I'm sure Morey could get the Thunder, Clippers, Pacers and other teams interested among the Nets and Lakers.

I think Dwight cares too much about his image to do this all over again. His agent would not care what Dwight wants after he re-signs in Houston and sees better endorsement offers come in.

Different CBA, completely different situation. Howard will not be involved in any sign and trade.

If the Rockets somehow wind up with DH, the Rockets would NOT be able to S&T him to the Lakers next offseason, as LA is over the luxury tax apron. The Lakers either get Dwight now, at the trade deadline, or not at all.

The only way Dwight could make it to the Nets (or any other capped-out team), besides a trade at the trading deadline, is through a S&T with Houston during the offseason. (A S&T with another team would merely net Dwight the SAME amount of money as just signing as a free agent.) I don't see Morey being willing to S&T DH anywhere (least of all the Nets). In that case, he has to find a team with max cap room and outright sign with that team. His choices then boil down to Atlanta, Dallas, or Houston (for more money & years). The end.

I've seen this said a couple of times, and I'm wondering where you got that from.

To my knowledge, that is not true. Bird rights only expire when a player clears waivers or signs out-right to a new team without a SnT

Bro, are you even paying attention? The CBA changed all that, even in a S&T he'd still only be able to get a 4 year deal.

one more thing people have not mentioned is adidas . Going to Houston vs la or Brooklyn he would stand to lose a ton. Woj was the one who reported he didn't want to go to Chicago cause rose an addidas guy was already there.
so does leaving 30 million on floor albeit salary hurt? Sure but if he goes to a market he likes and wants he can recover, rose got 150 million from adidas. 150>30

Adidas will follow Dwight wherever he goes. They followed T-Mac here, didn't they? That's like saying Kevin Durant isn't getting a huge deal from Nike because he's in OKC. We all know that's simply not true. The superstars dictate what the shoe companies do. Not the other way around.

Yes if he goes to LA or Brooklyn then 30 million loss on salary won't hurt that much. But if he is a free agent next year, he won't have a chance to go to those two teams. He can sign with Dallas for 30 million loss, but Dallas is not as big a market as LA or Brooklyn, then 30 million loss hurts, I think.

Orem, you know I've been on board with why we should trade for him all along. But, even though this latest spin from his camp seems to actually give Houston more leverage, I'm sensing for some reason Les and Morey may not be quite as interested.... may be wrong... it's just a feeling.

I posted this in another thread...

I haven't wanted this guy from the beginning.

But, I've posted several times here detailing as to why it was smart to trade for him and take the risk - he likely will not walk away from thirty million.

While you are right, his value can't really be much lower, there comes a point in time where Les and Morey will feel it's just not worth the hassle and move on, regardless of the fact he's one of the top five players in the league.

It's one thing to trade for a guy when there are just "rumors out there" that he doesn't want to be traded to Houston. The thirty mil combined with the fact they are confident he will like it here, especially when he's able to see how quickly Morey can work, make it worth the risk.

But, when his camp starts threatening to "walk into Dallas' cap space" - even though it is very likely BS - it may very well be to the point of just moving on.

The whole "what if he comes here and is a cancer" thing was never really an issue. It's a contract year and he IS a good guy, over all. He's not the type of guy to half step on the court and isn't known for letting his teammates down.

However, now that they've gone as far as making (likely HOLLOW) threats of walking into Dallas' cap space (likely laughable, but what else do they have to use as leverage at this point - NOTHING), there becomes more at play here.

What type of fall out will there be from the team and fans IF ANYTHING goes wrong. His back causes him issues, he actually does walk, ANY friction between him and McHale or teammates happens, etc. While Les and Morey would be setting themselves up to look bad and have a "public outcry" of "I told you so" and "Why in the hell did you even trade for this guy when he didn't want to be here", it was worth the risk before the latest spin was put out there by his camp. It may not be now.

Of course, they may not feel the same and could very well be salivating right now, believing they are in a better position than before. I don't get that feeling, however.

I'm sensing they feel it might just be time to look elsewhere and attempt to get a Gay, Granger, Iguodala type player for possibly K-Mart's expiring deal, maybe a Parsons and one of the draft picks (not rookies, actual picks).

    We'll see soon enough though.

If Dwight were willing to walk away from $30M none of this would be an issue. It’s that simple. He knows that he is not re-signing with Orlando. If he didn’t raise a fuss, they would just keep him and he would be forced to leave that money on the table. Ask yourself why he doesn't just play out his contract and choose where he wants to go next summer. He is trying to force a trade to his team of preference so that he can re-sign painlessly. It’s called having your cake and eating it too. This is his last chance to have some control over where he goes, so we shouldn’t get all bent out of shape that he is try to control it a little.

Think back 12 years ago when Orlando had the most cap room of any team in the league. Enough to sign two max players. When Duncan decided to go back to San Antonio, Grant Hill and McGrady went to Orlando. Probably not either of their first or second (or even third) preference if they could choose from any team in the league, but it’s where the money was. So the top three free agents that year went to San Antonio and Orlando. Hardly glamorous choices but when they hit free agency and look at the landscape it’s almost as if they don’t really have much of a choice. With a salary cap in place, some teams just can’t compete. And unfortunately for the players, sometimes it's going to be the behemoths that can't compete with the smaller markets..

No, please. If we don't get Howard...pass on all of those players. Pass on Gay even if we get Howard.

We're not trying to be mediocre any longer. Howard or tank.

I'd take Bynum, but otherwise I agree with your sentiment. Giving up young assets for the Gay/Smith/Igoudala tier is EXACTLY what the Rockets need to avoid, if no Dwight/Bynum.

*shakes his head, as if no one's mentioned the whole Adidas spin yet*

Your comparison assumes Dwight gets no money from Adidas if he signs anywhere but Chicago. And that's just wrong.

You can't look at how much money he would get from Adidas if he played in a single market. You have to look at the difference in amounts he would get playing in one market versus another, and then compare that to the NBA salary difference. The problem is that we don't know what the incentives are for playing in any of these markets.

If his only choices are playing for the Lakers, the Nets, the Magic, the Rockets, the Hawks or the Mavericks, you've got to look at how much Adidas would pay him as incentive for each of those markets (information none of us have). Then decide if the difference is greater or less than the salary difference in walking from his current team at the end of the 12-13 season to go to the market of his choice.

Well, he can't do that with any market other than Houston, Dallas and Atlanta, as other reportedly interested teams will not have the cap space to outright sign him in free agency. So you focus on the Adidas incentive for playing in those markets only. And I seriously doubt the differences are greater than 30 million dollars between the 3, which is what he would be walking away from if he left the team he ends the 12-13 season with.

Of course, the LAL or BKN markets might have a significantly larger incentive difference than what he'd make from Adidas in these other markets, but if he doesn't end the season there, then it's a moot point. So if that IS the case, that Adidas will pay more for the larger markets, then the only thing DH can do is try to manuever his way to either of those teams via trade, which is what he's doing now.

After the trade deadline, it comes down to which under the cap teams are in markets with larger Adidas incentives than the 30 million salary hit he'd take.

The whole "$150 million is greater than $30 million" argument I've seen on these boards is simply a bad comparison and a misunderstanding of what his Adidas contract will pay him for changing markets versus the salary hit he'd take for leaving the team with his Bird's Rights.

I agree with you - IF you had to give up multiple YOUNG ASSETS.

I'm not saying that's what I want to do, I'm saying it wouldn't surprise me if that's what Morey ends up doing if the Dwight thing doesn't come to fruition.

If Philly or Memphis (and Morey may not be interested if he doesn't feel Gay is a max player, to match his salary), or Indiana is wanting to shed salary, and would be interested in an expiring Martin and a future pick, I definitely could see Morey pulling the trigger.
