That's a good idea. But it hurts Les' wallet in the short-term. We know that Les don't play dat.

Good idea, although I would rather have the rockets leak that they are planning on signing all their rookies on a certain date. If you sign one by one, then one rookie might get jealous that another was signed first.

I'm certain Orlando has a deadline from DM.

It is not a really bad decision for the Magic. Considering, that our offer is better than the Net's because of the cap relief. Well Morey has already made it clear that we would only take one bad contract from them. Therefore, the opportunity cost for Magic is about 6-8m + the early 1 round draft pick they will receive for tanking. Additionally, it is widely believed that the talent pool in the next season draft is not that high, Magic seems not to be very interested in it. A middle to early pick switch probably require 6-14m of capital. So they are using about 17m of opportunity cost to buy a chance to persuade DH12 to stay. If we compare this to the impact on Cavaliers when Lebron left the team, 17m seems to be a peanut.

On the other hand, I don't think Rockets are interested in increasing the offer. They needs to keep enough cap flexibility and talents to persuade Dwight to stay. If the assets we have doesn't make Dwight believes we will be the top 5 teams in the next 2-4 seasons, he is likely to demand to be trade to the Net.

Dumb logic by Orlando. They saw last year that delaying to the deadline did not make their impossible pipedream offer appear. On top of that, half their roster HATES Howard. Nelson resigned with the explicit understanding that Dwight would be gone.

At this point, I'd enjoy Morey royally screwing over Hennigan by pulling out of the derby.

LOL at the idea of the Magic trading for a vastly overpaid Brook Lopez in February.

Great, we are in the top 5, then we are going to be ok, Howard or not, who cares.

Their scout probably believe Brook Lopez has a much higher upside than the rooks we drafted this year. Other they wouldn't took the Net offer in the beginning.

Then their scouts should be fired immediately.

Just wondering if the team that "Magic-ally" lands Dwight Howard be the most hated team in the NBA, even more so than even LeBron James and the Heat....

When LeBron left Cavaliers, their franchise value has dropped 120m, and Magic probably believes that the difference between our offer and the net offer is much small than this (again they seem to have a favour in Lopez's upside), and it is worth the cost to buy the chance to persuade Dwight to stay.

at first i thought this latest rumor was a particularly desperate bluff, but unfortunately it makes sense for the Magic, so long as Dwight's return to the magic this season is at all tenable.

he's a good enough player that we will give the same package at the trade deadline. simple as that.

after all, the most important element in this trade is not dwight's services this year, but his bird rights going forward. those probably won't depreciate over half a season, no matter how much he reiterates a desire to test free agency (consider that he's been saying that for some time now).

by waiting, the magic gain the chance--however unlikely--to patch up the relationship with dwight and the ability to evaluate our rookies in action. they lose next to nothing. there's the chance that his trade value will plummet because of terrible injury, but you can't let that sort of thinking dictate your actions.

That said, I don't see a "home run" offer emerging that hasn't already been tested. So, barring a catastrophic flop by our rookies, we're still the most promising landing spot for dwight at the trade deadline. but i don't know if we should pull the trigger then. I'm solidly in favor of dwight now, but if we get him at the deadline, he has less time to acclimate, and our playoff chances will be lower, so it would be easier and more understandable to leave.

    100% FALSE.

The Rockets would be much less willing to offer anything to the Magic at the deadline. If Orlando holds out until then, it's unlikely Howard's suitor would be the Rockets for the following reasons.

    1. The Rockets would (likely) have a crappy record by then. They're not renting Howard to be a 7th seed having to go up against LA/OKC in the first round

    2. The Rockets no longer have roster flexibility by then. They currently have like 20 players. Trading for Howard puts them over the cap, and allow them more room to manuever without worry of affecting their capspace. They can then add more salaries like Josh Smith or whoever else they target without fear that it will screw their capspace for a Dwight Howard trade. They can add players for vet minimum without worrying about capspace.

    3. It's quite possible for the Rockets to start the season with Howard and current group, and add someone at the deadline from a team fading away from contention, maybe say Iggy or Granger if their teams are floundering. It's much harder to swing for two major trades at the deadline for Howard + one of those guys at the same time.

    4. The Rockets have less time to actually get Howard acclimated to the team and the city, hence reducing their odds of keeping him.

And I'm sure there are others. Overall, Morey would just go ahead and cancel any trade plans if Hennigan wait til later. And Hennigan will have to hope like hell that someone will give him a better package at the deadline than what the Rockets supposedly have offered(KMart, one of our rookies, Toronto's pick, Dallas pick, and get one of their crappy contracts).

Do the bird rights come with him if he's traded at the deadline? If they don't, then his trade value would absolutely plummet.

Yeah, they should. That's why he may ask to be traded to Brooklyn by the deadline as well.
