Nope. Totally different defensive skill sets.

With regards to the question, Tyson Chandler is better at post up defense. Asik is already much better at pick and roll defense. Speaking of which, according to synergy, the Knicks actually played better defense with the DPOY Tyson Chandler on the bench. Omer Asik on the other hand, brought an incredible good defensive team in the Bulls 9 ppp higher. Omer was the best player defensively on the entire Bulls squad, and on of the top in the NBA. Granted, this was against bench players many times, however he held true to these numbers when asked to go against starters. Asik is entering his 3rd year now, which is indicates a quantum leap in ability and skillset in the NBA.

Glad we got him on such an awesome contract.

I agree Asik is way quicker on defending the PnR but I also think Asik is nearly as strong. They are essentially the same on offense.

In fact '' Aşık'' means ''Lover'' in turkish so this sounds a little bit ironic.. :)

I am concerned that he will foul out relatively quickly as a starter.

Asik won't be over paid provided he can play close to 30 minutes per game. What he has provided in his minutes can't be disputed. The guy is an excellent defensive player. Whether he is overpaid or not depends on how you value defense over offense. Al Horford (until last year) was pretty durable. He has played over 30 minutes a game every year and been good for about 12 pts, 9 reb and 1 blk. His per 36 was last year was 14/10/1. That has earned him a contract worth $12M over the next four years. You hardly ever hear of Horford being overpaid. He provides a service needed on his team.

Emeka Okafor has a career line of nearly 12/10/2 and a per 36 last year of 14/11/2. He will be making $13-15M the next two years . Is he overpaid? Some would say so, but as you look at the contracts of these types of players, it starts to seem that it's just the going rate (deAndre Jordan?).

Rebounds and points are equally valuable, and I would probably regard the combination of rebounds and blocks being more valuable than points. Omer projects at per 36 to be 8/12/2.3 a game. His ability to play prolonged minutes appears to be the key to earning his contract. And if he does perform to those projections, the Rockets will have him at about 60% of the going rate.

Most of the moves this summer are a gamble and I have to admit that I like that Morey is taking a chance. And if Asik ends up being a backup again, it's been proven that playing behind Howard can still put you in demand.

Do you guys think we could have gotten Asik for less, like maybe 6mil a year?
It seems like the Bulls weren't planning on matching him anyway.

I have the same worry ever since the offer. His foul/40 = 5.0, which ranks him slightly high among legit 5's in the league. If we dont get DH, D-Mo can share the 5 with Asik.

We dont really need his scoring but if he learns to play some PnR's, he will keep the defense honest.

How would this guy match up to chuck on D? besides being 7ft and blocking shots, what is asik better at? What is chuck better at? I think the only thing i could say is chuck's post D is better and his defensive positioning is also better. But besides that, they both guard pick n rolls very well, both can guard iso's very well and both can just handle there own against the biggest in the league well.

being a 7 footer and shot-blocker is a BIG DEAL in the league. Plus he is much more effective at discouraging shots and preventing players from getting a clear path down the paint (yes, Chuck was good at this too but players could still scoop over him). He brings Yao/Deek defense to the team, something we haven't had from a starter since Yao went down. He can change shots, block, and provide a body around the rim...all those things beat out a 6'6 chuckwagon, as much as I loved him when he played for us.

    Unlikely.

Not only did they seriously consider matching (at least it was reported as such), but they also wanted to offer him $24M over 4 years.

He signed the offer sheet for the chance at starting, as well as being able to be a free agent again after three years. (at least that's what I read earlier)

I wouldn't say we haven't had those things since yao and deke, last year we had camby and the bear. Those 2 are no slacks on D, i would put them both in the top 15 defensive center's in the league right now. But yes i know shot blocking can change a game and wasn't trying to undermine that, was just saying besides from the obvious.

8m/yr for a 7 ft who's not a total stiff or a headcase and has a few years experience... I'm good with that...

yeah....but neither is a "future" starter with upside, I guess is what I was getting at.

But height does make a huge difference. Every inch counts. That's what she said.
