    There was an episode of that Sports Science show where they had Amare vs. a piano in trying to break a breakaway rim/backboard. Amare's dunks registered something like 1000 lbs max, but the board didn't break. They tied a piano to the front of the rim and then dropped it from 20 or 30 feet in the air. They said it registered something like 6000 lbs. on the "dunk". The backboard still didn't break, but the way the goal was constructed caused the arm joint in the back to break and the entire thing to collapse while also bending the rim. It was pretty much like they showed in this video. Tragic way to go. Poor guy.

    Yeah, I remember watching that play and thinking, "Man, he's lucky he only got a knock on the head from the shot clock. That could've killed him."

    Very sad. RIP.

    Possibly.
    But would you rather have dozens (hundreds?) of potential glass shattering incidents where someone may lose an eye or two?
    Or one freak isolated incident every half century or so?
