Last time, I looked at our chances to move up on draft day. It showed that moving up to a get a top pick on draft day rarely happens, which is one of the reasons why it didn't work for us.

So what are our chances of having one of the draft picks in the last 3 years turning out to be a superstar or high quality player? Patterson, Morris, Montie, Lamb, Jones, and White were all drafted between ranges 12-20 in the draft. How have players in the past succeeded in the NBA after getting passed up by at least 11 other teams? Patterson was drafted in 2010 so I'm going to start at 2009.

2009
12. Gerald Henderson
13. Tyler Hansbrough
14. Earl Clark
15. Austin Daye
16. James Johnson
17. Jrue Holiday
18. Ty Lawson
19. Jeff Teague
20. Eric Maynor

2008
12 Jason Thompson
13 Brandon Rush
14 Anthony Randolph
15 Robin Lopez
16 Marreese Speights
17 Roy Hibbert
18 JaVale McGee
19 J.J. Hickson
20 Alexis Ajinca

2007
12 Thaddeus Young
13 Julian Wright
14 Al Thornton
15 Rodney Stuckey
16 Nick Young
17 Sean Williams
18 Marco Belinelli
19 Javaris Crittenton
20 Jason Smith

2006
12 Hilton Armstrong
13 Thabo Sefolosha
14 Ronnie Brewer
15 Cedric Simmons
16 Rodney Carney
17 Shawne Williams
18 Oleksiy Pecherov
19 Quincy Douby
20 Renaldo Balkman

2005
12 Yaroslav Korole
13 Sean May
14 Rashad McCants
15 Antoine Wright
16 Joey Graham
17 Danny Granger
18 Gerald Green
19 Hakim Warrick
20 Julius Hodge

2004
12 Robert Swift
13 Sebastian Telfair
14 Kris Humphries
15 Al Jefferson
16 Kirk Snyder
17 Josh Smith
18 J. R. Smith
19 Dorell Wright
20 Jameer Nelson

2003
12 Nick Collison
13 Marcus Banks
14 Luke Ridnour
15 Reece Gaines
16 Troy Bell
17 Žarko Čabarkapa
18 David West
19 Sasha Pavlović
20 Dahntay Jones

2002
12 Melvin Ely
13 Marcus Haislip
14 Fred Jones
15 Boštjan Nachbar
16 Jiri Welsch
17 Juan Dixon
18 Curtis Borchardt
19 Ryan Humphrey
20 Kareem Rush

The BEST that have come out of these draft ranges have been Al Jefferson, Josh Smith, Danny Granger, Roy Hibbert, Jrue Holiday, and maybe Javale McGee. Put all of these players on the same team and you still won't have a championship.

NONE of these guys in the last 10 years are superstars that can change the face of our franchise and be building blocks. How can anyone expect one of our draftees to be able to?

Don't get me wrong, I love what these guys have done in the summer league but the chances of any of them turning this franchise around is slim to none. If the opportunity to trade for Howard or Bynum is there then you take and run.

Remember though this draft was one of the deepest drafts in a long time. You can't say how good the player will be just based on where he was drafted. Motie was a top 5 pick for a while prior to his draft, but fell because he couldn't rebound. White is a top 10 talent in this draft but fell due to off-court issues.

12-20 draft pick doesn't mean they are just as good as the 12-20 in other drafts. (Not sure if that was worded correctly) Some drafts are very deep like this one and some drafts are just god awful like half those drafts you posted.

Now I am not saying our draftees will be stars, but 1 or 2 of the rooks definitely have potential to be potential stars.

Dwight doesn't want to be here, so the feeling should be mutual.

Draft picks in past years have absolutely no bearing on drafts succeeding them.

Also, OP, you realize that we need a team to compete for a championship? We'll be gutting the team for Howard.

It'll seriously be:

Scrub 1
Scrub 2
Scrub 3
Scrub 4
Howard.

Bench: Scrubs 5-12.

And then, when Howard leaves Houston because we failed to make the playoffs as the Houston Magic, Scrub 5 can take his place at the C position, while we sign another scrub to sit on the bench.

Howard won't leave Houston unless he wants to leave 25 mil on the table. He already showed his hand last summer that he is all about the money.

Yes, Houston won't be good next year but superstars are hard to come by. You don't make a championship team in one year unless you are the Miami Heat. Morey has showed time and time again that he can trade and find good role players that can compliment a superstar. (Example - everyone on the current team) Every year he finds another "diamond in the rough" role player but the one thing he can't do if get a superstar.

Getting the superstar is the hardest part, not filling the spots around him. If that superstar is Howard then Morey will build around him. Howard isn't going to leave in one year if traded here.

THIS! This would be the worst scenario, though circumstances might have changed since we signed Asik and that limits cap space (less bad contracts we can take in). DM has shown the ability to balance between rebuilding/staying competitive. If it's just Howard and J.Rich, we shouldn't have to give up the farm.

Yes, the perception of "2012 was a deep draft."

Before the draft, when we were about to trade for Howard everyone says, "2012 draft is deep but they mean that it's deep with a ton of people that can end up being good role players. We don't need role players, we need a superstar so let's trade those picks for Howard! All aboard the bandwagon!"

After the draft and summer league, when everyone starts to get attached to players and jump on the bandwagon. People say, "This draft was deep! Potential superstars everywhere! Did you see Player X and Player Y at summer league?! Sure fire superstars in 1-2 years for sure! Let's hope off the Howard bandwagon and jump on this one!"

There is a chance (non-zero probability) of Howard signing and staying in Houston. Without the Rockets giving up their best prospects. Starting line up in 2014-2015:

Lin
Lamb
Parsons
D-Mo
Howard

Everyone else can take a flying leap off a bridge for all I care.

I have always been against trading 3 lottery-esque picks for Howard. From day one. Even more so now.
