Did you read the article? I think it was made pretty clear that we were the team that was going to end up with Howard at the deadline had he not opted in.

90% chance he resigns with the Rockets...at least.

Exactly. Lets pretend we get Dwight, the upcoming year is going to be a massive headache for the team with internal uncertainty about whether he stays or goes as well the constant media speculation.

If Dwight doesn't change his stance and sign a long-term deal (which he prob. won't) and makes no conciliatory statements that Houston might be in his future plans (as opposed to "definitely won't re-sign"), then the media speculation and Dwightmare will continue all year . I can see this distracting the team, pissing off the fans, and creating the same poisonous atmosphere Orlando is experiencing.

That is a major reason why I wouldn't want to give up the farm of rookies and promising young players for a one year rental for Dwight who even with him next year, I DOUBT the Rockets are title contenders (still behind LAL, OKC, Miami, BOS)...so if he walks after the season is the commotion, media circus, and no-title shot worth mortgaging the future for?

I'm beginning to think no. Its not like Morey won't try for other stars and free agents after next year?!!! People keep making it seem like we'll be the Golden State Warriors for the next 10 years without Dwight. Morey and Les will remain aggressive on the free agent front and try to make that big splash to land a star--whether its Dwight or someone else. I see this more as a one-year rebuild with an aggressive plan to find more pieces in the near future if the Dwight plan doesn't work out. Morey would never trade all those valuable pieces if he KNEW Dwight would only be in the plans 1 year--a lot hinges on the fact that we THINK he'll resign due to more money--but the more he insists he won't, why bring in a person who has zero, zilch, nada, zippo reason for staying here??

There is no one knows about it. There are a lot of reporters say he won't, yet there also are reporters say he probably will.

I have a very strong feeling that D-12 will become a Laker. Its just destined for some reason. Look on the bright side we have four guys that could become superstars.

L.A. doesn't have the pieces to do the deal without us.

I love lamb and D-mo but IMO their ceiling is all-star. I think both would benefit a ton playing with Howard though right from the start.

Let me backtrack also by saying I would love to trade for Howard. I'm just not as willing to give up any of Lamb, Parsons, or Dmo for him.

I'll copy a couple of my posts from the Asik thread (where we shouldn't have got off topic and started talking about Dwight...lol). Warning - very long post.

We can speculate that he will be a rental, but all signs point that he wants a 5 year deal at maximum raises. If we never take a risk, we are always going to end up in this mediocrity we are currently in. We are talking about taking a high risk, with INSANELY high reward. The best defensive center in the league.

We know Morey can build a team around him. I am certain we will convince him to stay with the Rockets. You take the risk because there are no other teams out there with the cap space that Dwight would possibly want to go to. Maybe Dallas, maybe, but that's it. Who else can attract him. Certainly none of the LA franchises nor NY franchises. None of them have the pieces to provide anything significant. It would probably be between Atlanta, Dallas and Houston when he makes a choice. I'll take my chances.

    ...........VERY, VERY well said.

    Agree 100%.

To be clear, yes... I'm leary of all the drama (mostly media driven) and do NOT look foward to all that BS.

For this reason (and the fact I DO like Lamb), I will be OK if the trade does not happen OR we end up with Bynum, who, while is the lesser player, won't bring near as much BS and will likely also be easier to re-sign (although I DO think Dwight refuses to pass up $30M and DOES re-sign in Houston).

But, the above post says it all.

When you have an opportunity to acquire a true game/franchise changer, you must take the risk.

Houston doesn't have a "remote" chance to re-sign Dwight in the offseason if we trade for him. We have the inside track. Better than 50%.

............And when you are a "numbers guy" like me, THIS is why I don't have a problem with Morey and Les' approach (in today's NBA) of trying to remain competitive and acquire a top talent via free agency and/or trade.

Obviously, the odds are BETTER. Taking this road is extremely frustrating for fans, but no more so than going through what the Astros are. Sure, we can say "Well, at least the 'Stros are doing it the right way and they are building for the future... and it looks brighter than it has in years".

True, but man, if I had to take my pick of watching the Rockets go through what the 'Stros have the past two seasons or what the Rockets have went though - both extremely frustrating - I'll take the road the Rockets are traveling EVERY time. At least they are NEAR the playoffs. At least there's a CHANCE that if they're able to acquire one or two players with a team that is just missing the playoffs, they have a chance to be right there. At least it's interesting and even exciting every trade deadline...lol.

People are way too blinded by what OKC was able to do, which is extremely rare. Much more rare than what the Rockets are attempting to do.

Morey has the team in position to acquire one of the game's biggest stars, all while also having them firmly on the road to re-building, if necessary. Impressive job. I realize if a trade doesn't happen, we are ridiculously young - but, with the pieces he's put together, I cannot see us going through years like GS, Sac, Tor, Was, etc.

Time will tell, but this is my opinion.

I mean, the idea that people would believe such words so readily is why he thinks people are dense. Who needs common sense when you have gazillion different "insiders" posting "anonymous sources" telling you whether or not Dwight Howard has farted within the past hour?

    ........Exactly.

More proof of this is when the RealGM guy (who broke the opt in last year) came out with the "NOW we're gonna' see what the Magic are doing. What they are about. If they're full of BS and just messing around"... hinting that, after the report comes out of Dwight being WILLING to re-sign in LA, NOW Orlando BETTER make a trade happen... OR ELSE... everyone will see they are "doing Dwight wrong". ????? Huh????

    That was comical.

And, the naive fan sees the headline "Dwight willing to re-up in LA" and, after listening to the "insider", feels A) we have no shot at re-signing him or even getting him and B) Dwight is a "victim"...lol.

That guy coming out with that "cricitcal information" to SHOW everyone what was up - meant absolutely NOTHING. It was meaningless.

He WANTED everyone to think "OK, so even if Dwight AGREES to re-sign somewhere, you see the Magic are still playing games...."

When, the facts were (even before the agent came back and disputed the report and said Dwight would NOT promise to re-sign and he'd explore free agency), it didn't change anything. It didn't change what LA or Cleveland could offer.

It was a GAME. Notice he didn't come out and say "OK, Dwight is willing to re-sign in HOUSTON, let's see what the Magic do"...lol. He said LA 'cause it's painfully obvious to Dwight's camp that the LA/Cleveland BS was about as bad as the Nets mess.

If the pieces aren't there to get the best deal possible, Hennigan is NOT going to take "whatever he can get" and just get him somewhere where he promises to re-sign. Hennigan is doing what should always be done - he holds the cards.

LeBron was a FREE AGENT. New York offered the BEST PACKAGE to Denver. These scenarios are nothing like this one. Additionally, with the new CBA, the chances of Dwight actually "walking away" to play somewhere else (as everyone mentioned, likely Dallas or Atlanta) are actually very low (no matter what Adidsas does for him).

...........I'm NOT saying Howard won't sign elsewhere.

I'm saying, that when you have the opportunity to acquire a star of his magnitude, you take the risk.

For those saying "Well then why is Orlando trading him if he won't walk away from the most money?", the two scenarios are entirely different. It's taken YEARS for the Dwight/Orlando relationship to get to where it has. There are a LOT of hard feelings and grudges.

Also, as most who know him will attest, Dwight is generally a "good guy" who cares what others think of him - especially fans.

Knowing the relationship with the organization and also THE FANS has run it's course, Dwight WILL likely leave Orlando.

If he's in Houston, while the initial reaction will be that of disappointment (knowing how badly he wanted to be in Brooklyn), the love he'll feel from both the fans and the organization will feel entirely different than if he were to play the season out in Orlando. The fact that we'd have an entire year to do everything possible to show him it's a good situation here and that Morey can put together a contending team around him, without the negative atmosphere he'd be in if he were to stay in Orlando all plays in Houston's favor.

Orlando has finally made the decision to move on without him. The team and the city are DONE with him. But again, it's taken years to get to this point. Two totally different scenarios.

Dude, quit trolling on the behalf on Dan Fegan and Co. You go on truebluenation and spew this same Laker-Fanboy crap and claim to be a magic fan, and now you try and claim to be a rocket fan.

No matter how hard you asshats try to push this D12 to LA crap, it's NOT going to happen without a proper faciliatator, which is 95% likely to be the Rockets.

Maybe Dwight would leave 30M on the table if Brooklyn or LA were available...but his options will be extremely limited.

    Reason 1: Money
    Reason 2: Lack of options

Those two are reason enough...I dont see Dwight leaving Houston once he comes here. And Im not going to even include all the opportunities Dwight would get when Linsanity hits Houston.

Max contract players dont leave their team to go make less money elsewhere. If Dwight leaves Houston, it would be in a sign and trade...not just outright free agency.

I'm not sure on the details in the new CBA but isn't there some rule also that bird rights can't be transferred (meaning no max 5 year deal with receiving) midseason anymore? Maybe Bima can clarify.

But do you not see how ridiculous that sounds? You're not willing to part with 2 players that have yet to step foot onto an NBA court or a guy like Parsons, who's ceiling is "great role player", in order to bring in one of the very best players in the NBA? The combination of the 3 of them still wouldnt be as good as Howard is at this moment, even with his bad back.

If your concern is that Howard would leave after a year and leave us with nothing...that wont happen. Worst case scenario, we get involved in a sign and trade, which means we get a return on Howard. Best case scenario, he resigns with Houston, making it that much more worthwhile to give up players like Parsons or Jones for Howard.

    Same here.

Most would love Dwight. I think we all differ on what we are willing to give up for a possible rental.

Since it is a possible rental I just don't think we'll be giving up as much as some speculate.

Going to be in between the two extremes. We're not going to give up 3 rookies and 3 picks and take back 3 bad contracts. But we're probably not getting away with Dwight for some lowball as f*** deal like Patterson, Morris, TOR pick in exchange for 1 bad contract.

I'm fine with giving up Lamb, White, two picks, and taking back two contracts (depending on which ones, I don't want Turk). That seems like a fairly realistic offer.

Exactly. And another report claimed the real tipping point for him opting in was fan reaction on his twitter page.

Can't remember the source (maybe someone can help me), but apparently, he didn't realize he was being made out as the bad guy near as much as he actually was.

The twitter posts coming in right around that time pushed him to opt in (again, not saying which of any of these scenarios is true or not, just relaying the "report"... 'cause I certainly thought he opted in to stop the trade to Houston...lol)
