Hate to interrupt, but Durant didn't have Jones, White and Motiejunas to start his career off with. Jeremy Lamb does.

If we take some of Orlando's bad contracts, how would not we be capped out?

Okay let's run the math for you.

Let's say we take back Howard, Richardson, and Big Baby, then Howard walks.

Richardson + Big Baby + Asik + Lin = about $29 million before filling out the rest of the roster with rookies and w/e. Cap is currently about $58 million. You do the math.

If Howard stays then yeah we'll be close to the cap, but we'll have Dwight Howard, so who cares.

Sorry to break the news to you but Lamb will be much more than a role player IMO. He can easily turn into a top 3 player in this draft class. Yes he might never be as impactful as Dwight. But Dwight + Lamb > Dwight + Orlando scrubs.

This team will not be that bad after the first season. They'll make the playoffs next season. They might get lucky and make it their first.

Dwight + a capped out roster get you nowhere though. That team would have no upside at all.

Excuse me, this is Daryl Morey we're talking about. He can build .500 teams filled with roleplayers in his sleep.

By the way I don't think we're giving up ALL of our rookies in the deal (probably not even "most" of our rookies). So there will be some upside. I'd be willing to bet Motiejunas stays, and at a bare minimum at least one of the other rookies people are so attached to.

I've noticed that a lot of you guys are saying trading for Dwight isn't that much of a risk anymore because

1.) If he walks we'll get a high lottery pick

2.) His two favoured destinations LA and NY don't have the cap room to sign him for anything more than the MLE

BUT you aren't seeing the better option here.

It seems inevitable that he's going to opt out and explore free agency, it's a better financial decision for him unless he has an abomination of a year and bombs his value. CP3 himself has already stated he chose to forgo a three-year extension with the Clippers because he'd prefer to sign a five-year contract with them after his current one expired at the end of the season.

If this is the case the Rockets can sign him WITHOUT losing any of our assets.

If Dwight chooses to explore free agency after the season than only Atlanta, Cleveland and Dallas can compete with us for his signature unless he opts to take a paycut to go elsewhere. Houston will be in a more competitive position to bid for his services if we DO NOT TRADE with the Magic as we won't have to take back any bad contracts & we don't have to shed all our young talent and future draft picks.

Dwight wants to win, and a team of Lin, Asik, talented sophomores, a high lottery pick and lots of cap room is much more desirable than Lin, Asik and bad contracts from the Magic that he wanted to leave behind. If he opts to explore free agency after the fact that Houston traded for him, we will be in a worst position

1.) To compete for his signature.

2.) With our roster going forward having lost all our young talent, picks and having a bad contract or two from the trade killing our cap room.

They don't get it. They actually believe he would resign here after he drags what is left of the Rockets to the 1st/2nd round of the playoffs.

The problem with this strategy is

    a) It removes our leg-up on DAL and ATL. At best we have a 33% chance of signing Dwight outright as a free agent.

    b) I don't think ORL will just hold onto him if the trade with us falls apart. I don't think they can go into training camp with him on the roster. They will go to a crappy fallback option, like trading for Bynum without an extension. Then Dwight signs in LA and we're f***ed.

Durant was surrounded with plenty of young assets and role-players. That's why his teams were lottery bound. Lamb is in a similar position to Durant was with the Supersonics.

This Houston Rockets roster looks like one of the worst in the West so far, if you're denying that you're being a massive homer. Young with lots of upside, sure, but not much proven NBA talent cf. other rosters.

You're under the mistaken impression that our roster looks like this:

    Lin
    Lamb
    Parsons
    Jones
    Motiejunas

It doesn't. It looks like this:

    Lin
    Martin
    Parsons
    Patterson
    Asik

That is not one of the worst teams in the West.

What you wrote is The Dream Scenario. Lin and rookies play really well and get the team to playoffs and make noise at the playoffs. Dwight recognizes the upside potential of this team and the marketing potential playing along side Lin and simply walks into Houston next offseason. We then only need to send a few picks to Orlando in a sign and trade to get Dwight the maximum money maximum years he can get. Too ideal though.

^ Forgot to add, we then don't need to send any of the youth away.:)
