They're all rookies, only one of which was chosen in the lottery, Jesus H. Christ, they aren't superstars. Lamb + Jones + K Mart +Tor Pick for Dwight + J Rich + Duhon is very much equal value if not less.

Do you disagree with my whole post or just the part you snipped out. I apologize I was unaware that as a fan I should not post my hopes for a player on a fan forum.

Go curse at someone else who is worthy of your time.

When is the drama with Dwight going to be over? As a huge fan of the Rockets, I would love for Dwight to come to Houston, but with all the drama I wouldn't mind going to battle with the young guns.... Ready to get it over with..... any more updates on the Asik deal? Are the bulls now on the clock?

Yeah, I know that it is always a risk to go for less GUARANTEED money.

But if that is ALL that it really boils down to, then it seems to me that that would make it much easier for Dwight to follow through on his threat to go all the way to free agency and try his luck then.

The problem is still going to be though, the same as it is now, that there just aren't going to be a very good selection of teams which will be able to afford him.

So yeah, I do get that the 5th year being guaranteed means he is protected, should something bad happen and his health deteriorate, or he is not playing up to his current level, or something like that.

But then it comes down to a gamble: by giving the max, we would be gambling that his performance would NOT be diminished in year 5, this would be the exact same thing Dwight would be gambling on if he DIDN'T take the 5th guaranteed year, hoping to just move directly on to his next contract.

But my original question remains: assuming his health and performance ARE up to his standards, is there any mechanism or provision of the CBA that would prevent his new 5th year (1st year of his NEW contract) from being the same dollar amount as our old 5th year amount?

    If so, good.

If not, then that is a big red flag to me.

If Howard is still a live option, hopefully Morey won't give up both Martin and Lamb. They can have Patterson and Morris without batting an eye. Parsons and White grudgingly, but not Martin and Lamb. One or the other, but not both. I would prefer to give up Martin; he is an expiring contract. I love his game, but Lamb is the future.

A lineup of Lin, Lamb, Howard, Jones, and Donuts would be formidable.

Unfortunately we might have to. Martin is required no matter what to make the salaries work and Lamb is probably the centerpiece for the Magic.

This is Dwight Howard we're talking about.

The team holding his bird rights are capable of offering him 7.5% raises through the duration of the 5 year contract compared to 5% raises from a team without his bird rights. This adds up to a bit of money, but probably not a number that will change Dwight's mind if he really does get a bigger shoe deal in a larger market. Unfortunately, Dwight can't reach these larger markets because none of them have the cap room to sign him as a free agent next off-season anyways.

Aside from this, there's the issue of year 1 new contract vs year 5 old. As I understand it, it depends greatly on the health of the NBA. The maximum salary you can offer a player on the first year of his contract is the higher of either a percentage (dependent on years in the league) of salary cap or 105% of the player's last year on his previous contract. In the scenario that he signs with another team for 4 years, his new first year would be the higher 105% of his 4th year or 35% of the salary cap in 2017-2018. Salary cap is based off of BRI, so depending on how well the NBA is doing the effect of year 1 vs year 5 could be either larger or smaller. If the salary cap is high enough that 35% of the 2017-2018 salary cap is greater than or equal to his year 5 salary on a bird contract, then he's barely better off or possibly even very slightly worse off by signing for 5 years. If 105% of his 4th year is the higher of the two, then the bird contract's 7.5% raises compounded over those 5 years will add up to a sizable difference throughout the life of his career.

This is all of course assuming he's able to keep healthy and get ANOTHER max contract after his next one. By the time his next contract ends, he'll be 31 or 32. Considering all the circumstances, I think the wisest thing he could do is take the 5 years. It's by far a safer bet.

Anyone more knowledgeable about the CBA feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on any of this. I'm by no means an expert on NBA contracts.

Careful, posters will come out in droves prepared to crap on you, lecturing you on Morey's leverage and how unreasonable you are for wanting to gamble on a rental.

Plain and simple guys. This team we have is better than anything Dwight Howard related. We have a pretty good young team that will win big for us some time in the future. For Les to throw Howard in there to destroy it would be absolutely idiotic.
