Ooh, Chinatown happens to be one of my favorite films and I agree with you about the ending. Its devestating.

    "Forget it, Jake. Its Chinatown."

No Country for Old Men. Very perplexing ending.

has nobody mentioned: Gone with the wind.

Rhett Butler: No, I'm through with everything here. I want peace. I want to see if somewhere there isn't something left in life of charm and grace. Do you know what I'm talking about?
Scarlett: No! I only know that I love you.
    Rhett Butler: That's your misfortune.

    No Country For Old Men

    That ending was perfect.
The villain is completely remorseless and the best thing that could have happened was getting hit by that bus/truck/whatever. I was immensely satisfied because that's what I was hoping would happen.

No way -- the ending while not awful was poor compared to the rest of the movie. They decided to turn him into a Jason Halloween type character. There were a number of big mistakes they made in the second half of that movie that brought it down from a classic to just a good movie.

This movie came out shortly after 6th Sense and gets completely forgotten -- great movie - great trippy ending.
