    Umm... Yea no ****?

Just look at all the random accusations thrown around as soon as the Bulgarian bombing happened.

    Iran
    Hamas
    Hezbollah
    Guantanamo Bay Prisoner

    without a shred of evidence.

I agree. Modern journalism is such a joke it shouldn't even be called "journalism". And don't get me started on "investigative journalism"...

I agree with your thesis, but I don't think that the example you used of a retraction and apology after they rushed to publish a story is quite the vehicle to make the argument. I would focus more on the sources that publish half-truths and out right falsehoods and never retract or apologize first and then move on toward the knee-jerk focus on getting the next big scoop such as this incident by ABC.

Cable, internet and the desire for ratings and to scoop are the primary issues. Probably very difficult to write anything accurate, relevant or well-reasoned in a 24 hour news cycle. Beyond the initial headline I'm not sure how many more incremental updates I really need to hear.

Good information sources are probably there if one is willing to spend the extra cash: should probably be looking at specialized topical publications or monthly/quarterly journals for any substance.

There's such a rush to be first in today's media. Being right, or really giving an in depth explanation of a situation has not only fallen onto the roadside it's dead and rotting in the ditch. Very sad.

I have posted this before. The corporate media giants need to be broken up a a la Teddy Rosevelt trust bust style.

It's not about facts anymore, it's about ratings and promoting and protecting corporate interests.

There's more independent media (mostly internet), but the major news sources (TV/radio/newspaper) are more centralized than ever.

I read the financial times daily and it still feels like a very good source of journalism, in fact this weekend they have a nice long one detailing Bo xiling's life and downfall.

Agree. This is one of the few subjects upon which we agree. For years I have been ashamed of my former profession. There are so precious few media and reporters who are accurate, fair, unbiased and without a liberal or conservative slant.

First it was the 24-hour cable news cycle, then the internet, then blogs, now twitter. It just seems to be getting worse. What's next?
