I at least think he has earned the right to not be called a fluke. People are making arguments that he hasn't been scouted so he went off and that's the only reason he did. If that's true then why did Sundiata Gaines only have that one game winner and then fade away into obscurity? He wasn't scouted either. Some people say the system inflated his numbers. Really? It was a dysfunctional system that was missing its two key components: Amar'e and Melo for the majority of the Linsanity streak. At the very least, I think his basketball IQ is very underrated. His physical tools are not that impressive, so its gotta be the mental aspect that drives his game. It might take a while, but I think once he gets familiar with this team and chemistry builds he'll be a very good player.
There's no penalty if a team doesn't meet the min payroll. The difference gets paid out to the players on their roster.
The penalty in that case is not signing a free agent who you could later flip into assets, like we did with Camby. 2nd round picks for nothing.
Only if he proves to be worth his contract. Otherwise keeping that cap flexibilty has greater benefits for trade opportunities. Taking on unwanted contracts have gotten unprotected firsts.
You are basing your thoughts on emotions and optimism. I hope he becomes great too. However, like I said, he's not proven it for a long period of time. The scenario has changed. He's not a new phenom now. He's not taking anyone by surprise. He has expectations now. We don't know how he'll react. Clutch has been watching Rockets basketball since the 80s, he can tell you the difference between, Robert Reid, Kenny Smith, Steve Francis, Matt Maloney, Dragic, or Lowry etc. I respect his opinion, he's not trying to throw water on Lin love fest, he's just basing his knowledge on his basketball knowledge. I know you guys think I 'hate' McGrady. When we first got him, the expectations were NBA Finals . I had the same expectations, just dissapointed we never got close. It definitely wasn't about basketball skill, he's proven himself. The excitement of Lin is not based on that level of basketball talent. it's on potential and other factors such as hype and popularity.
It is a gross misconception that he was never scouted. In fact after the All Star Break he was fully scouted and these are his numbers: Under Mike Dantoni Cleveland: 19 points 5 rebounds 13 assist 1 steal 1 TO Boston: 14 points 4 rebounds 5 assist 1 steal 6 TO Dallas: 14 points 3 rebounds 7 assist 2 steal 2 TO Spurs: 20 points 3 rebounds 4 assist 3 steal 1 TO Bucks: 20 points 1 rebound 13 assist 4 steal 5 TO Sixers: 14 points 3 rebounds 7 assist 2 steal 6 TO Bulls: 15 points 1 rebound 8 assist 3 steal 3 TO Under Mike Woodson Portland: 6 points 4 rebounds 6 assists 2 steals 6 TO's Pacers: 13 points 5 rebounds 5 assists 0 steals 3 TO's Pacers: 19 points 7 rebounds 6 assits 1 steal 2 TO's Toronto: 18 points 3 rebounds 10 assists 1 steal 3 TO's Philadelphia: 18 points 5 reboubnds 4 assists 1 steal 2 TO's Toronto: 6 points 1 rebounds 4 assists 0 steals 3 TO's Detroit: 13 points 3 rebounds 3 assits 2 steals 7 TO'
Didn't we get the 20th pick for freaking Brad Miller? That was the worst signing for Morey ever until he flipped it into D-Mo.
The Rockets traded the 23rd pick for the 20th pick. Jonny Flynn made it happen. It was more about dumping Minny Flynn than acquiring Miller.
Don't depress me. We need to re-recruit Colin Pine to be Clutch's "body guard" to spew out Chinese "excuse me" ... "wait your turn"..."get in the back of the line" expletives. Maybe Jonathan Feigan and Jason Friedman would be in for this, too.
I have to agree with Clutch and Tinman on this one. Anyone is who is SURE about Lin at this point is swinging towards the optimism end of the pendulum. It takes QUITE a bit to justify a 15M contract. Good luck Jeremy and confident fans!
Why are we holding Lin to the expectations of a 15M contract when the salary hit is only going to be 8.3 million per season?
Yeah, but that's not what we're faced with. That's the beauty of the poison pill. Other teams are worrying about overpaying, we don't have to worry about that.
What was said may not be as bad in terms of branding as you are putting it. Your like a little on the racist thingy point of view..?? Each time Lin's name is brought up, the "Rockets brand", as his home team is also in that conversation. Like CP3 was always synonymous with New Orleans. Jeremy Lin will now be a Houston Rocket... It's like free advertisement for the Rockets. Sure the Knicks were the first to sign Lin, but they did not sign him to a 3 year deal the first time! So if they had a clue as to how good he was or would be then why not wrap the dude up right out of the box? They had no clue nor did we the first time.. The CBA got in the way of the Rockets having time to really look at the man before cutting him. We had a lot of players under contract and had to cut a point guard.. Lin was then cut. D-Morey talked about the cut of money that the Rockets get in the "Branding" of a player or any player and he said it's not that much at all. I my mind "The Branding" we get from Lin, is the fact that he plays for the Rockets, and each time his name comes up now they will say "The Houston Rockets Point Guard Jeremy Lin"... Blah Blah Blah... Houston Rockets get the notoriety each time. Just my 2 cents. zzpot.
Wow.. Hmm.. and I have to agree with all you just said. But i don't have to agree with the way you said it and your possible total connotations. We have Lin now and that is that. The branding of Lin and the money thing people scream about.. Is twisted and... is not, a real world factor. Branding with a name and connection to a brand is a factor in the real world. Ticket sales. Names and players named in the media (TV or newspapers/glogs) and things like that. If J-Lins' new jersey is not sold in the Houston Rockets official NBA store then the Rockets get little to nothing from it's sale... say for instance it is sold in Taiwan or China, in a real NBA store over seas then the league shares the total sales per player. But the branding of Lin as a "Houston Rocket" adds to the city of Houston each time his name is said. zzpot.
And because we had Flynn's contract on the books after the Lockout we could not keep Lin at the time.. We had to cut Flynn and the hard money on the books or cut another point guard. The money and timeline won the debate. Flynn was not tradable at the time so Lin was cut and NY Knicks picked him up in a CBA contract year. Period Game Over! zzpot
It all comes down to the new CBA rules. The last year of Lin's deal for us is not $15 mill. The players union said they wanted these new rules and both the owners and players union agreed to them. Do both sides really understand the new CBA rules. These are the new rules is all i'm saying. zzpot
Not sure how you came to that conclusion, unless you're doing what you're rallying against -- comparing just one year of the deal (the first) to the other. Lin's average salary is higher than Dragic's. What you just said is exactly what I said with the quote to ESPN.
